Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Adult/High School--This book reprints issues 6 through 10 of the series. Cycles continues the story of young escape artist Yorick Brown and his pet monkey Ampersand, the only survivors of a mysterious plague that killed all the male mammals on Earth. This title finds Yorick and his pet are under the care of biologist Dr. Mann and Agent 355, an operative of the collapsed U.S. government. The two decide to sneak the somewhat willing Yorick from battle-torn Boston to a laboratory on the West Coast to discover what allowed the pair to survive. After Yorick disguises himself in a gas mask, the three hop a train and find themselves in a strangely idyllic town in rural Ohio. After only a brief rest, the feminist terrorist group Daughters of the Amazon tracks them down. Despite the action sequences, this is not a typical superhero book. In fact, the plague is the only fantastic element. This sense of realism brings accessibility, and it is enhanced by subtle artwork that focuses on the physical and emotional reactions of the characters. And the focus on character is the true strength of the book. Despite his rather daunting quest, Yorick still obsesses over his lost girlfriend and offers a seemingly endless supply of quips and puns. There are brief but interesting explorations of ideas like feminism, war, and male/female relationships. These elements add up to a comic perfect for readers ready to move on to more complex and mature story lines.--Matthew L. Moffett, Northern Virginia Community College, Annandale

From Booklist

At the end of Unmanned [BKL F 1 03], Yorick Brown, apparently the last man alive (hence the series title Y: The Last Man); 355, the mysterious agent guarding him; and Allison Mann, the cloning scientist who might figure out why Yorick survived, were watching Mann's Boston lab burn and mulling their options. Cycles begins with Yorick, disguised by a gas mask, trading a motorcycle for access to a boxcar heading west. The trio has opted for California, where Mann has backup files. They are obliged to stop in Ohio, however, after two hobos toss Yorick off the train and 355 sustains a concussion when she jumps after him. As 355 recovers, the latter-day Amazons who nearly killed Yorick in Unmanned track him down. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to all the other characters, an Israeli military team that also wants Yorick has reached Massachusetts. The artwork in this apocalyptic variation on The Fugitive remains pedestrian; though by avoiding panoramas and spectacle, it makes this a story about people rather than lurid action. Ray Olson

The responsibility of being the last man on earth must be a burden like no other; for Yorick, it appears to be just another day, as long as you don't consider the fact that he is being hunted by multiple groups of women for very different reasons. In the second volume of Y: The Last Man, Cycles, Brian K. Vaughan flexes his muscles in the story of Yorick, the last remaining man on earth.

Yorick and Agent 355 found Dr. Mann, the woman looking to cure the plague, but they didn't save her research. When her lab and all her research is burned, they decide to head across the country to her secondary lab in California. Unfortunately, there is a whole country full of women who would be very interested to learn about the last man on earth between them and California. They are able to bargain their way onto a train headed West, but they should have expected the trip couldn't be that easy. When they end up in a small, idyllic town, they can't believe how well these women are living. What they don't know is that the whole town is hiding a very big secret.

This volume does a great job of giving you glimpses into Yorick, Dr. Mann, and Agent 355, and because of that, you become heavily invested in the story after these issues. The first book was fun and exciting, but this is where you get hooked. The story line is complex and there are characters who will blow you mind. The reintroduction of Yorick's sister Hero is the most pivotal point for me. I just can't wrap my head around her and everything she is doing. And yet, why not? The world as they knew it is over. Why not capitalize on the new face of the planet?

One of the most interesting sides of this part of the story is how different groups of women cope with the death of all the men. Some are falling apart, but some are actually better off, and that is a hard thing to wrap your head around! I loved how much it made me think and process that fact. Of course we would all grieve the loss of our husbands, fathers, sons, and friends, but who would survive best? And how would the world change without them? It is a heady batch of questions, but you will keep asking yourself these and many more as you continue with this fabulous series!

Following the events of Vol. 1, Yorick, Mann and 355 head off to their new destination, but get stuck in a small town called Marrisville. This town seems to be doing quite a bit better than the rest of the world we've seen so far, but there is more to it than meets the eye.

This volume continues the good dialogue and artwork from the previous volumes, and as an added advantage Ampersand isn't being completely useless. The one problem I had with it is that Yorick makes some dumb decisions. But I'm still interested enough to check out the next volume.

Brian K. Vaughn is absolutely one of the best comic book writers out there. Ex Machina, Saga, and a slew of other titles.Vol. 2 of Y: The Last Man picks up where the last volume left off: Yorick and 355, along with doctor Mann, are on a quest to find a cure for whatever destroyed all things with a Y chromosome except Yorick and his monkey, Ampersand. Finding their way to California to Dr. Mann's backup lab is not easy, as Yorick meets up with someone close to him- who also wants to kill him. On the way, we meet some likable characters in a town with a secret. All of this sounds like the plot to a generic movie; but if you know Vaughn, you know his sense of humor, social commentary, and vulgar mouth make any story anything but generic. Fans should pick this up.

As the story moves across the country, we get more of the diversity of the survivors. I love it. I've always loved what if scenarios and this storyline does that magnificently. Two main plot twists occur that tells me more are to come. Great characters to love and hate.

I was turned on to Y The Last Man at work when I saw someone with the comic. I asked him what it was about and he told me. Being a fan of post-apocolyptica, I asked if it was any good. He looked straight into my eyes and said, "I don't read crap, man." If you looked at the guy, a stereotypical comic book/gaming nerd, you could tell he knew his stuff.

I went home and bought all the available graphic novels, 6 at the time. I have no regrets. I have since lent these novels to about a dozen people and they all loved it.

This comic perfectly blends action, comedy, sci-fi, romance, and drama together to create a world where women rule.

I'm still enjoying this series. I wish I had enough money to purchase the rest of the books and just marathon it! My issues so far are, one, there was nothing about Beth in this issue, i.e. the woman that's so important to Yorick that he can't be with anyone else despite being possibly the only man currently on Earth. I mean, I think they said she was his first, but, c'mon, give me some reasons, show what she's up to, make me like her too! Two, the Amazons and Hero. I just don't get it. I mean, I guess...nope, I really don't get it.

I’ve ordered first ten books, used. I liked that this one has quite a few conceptual sketches of the characters at the end of the book.

I watched the reality tv show before beginning the series. It’s great to see the differences in character decision making.

I’m sure in 2002 this felt further removed from reality than it does in 2021. Now the crumbling society and the horrors feel all too easy to believe.

That aside, this is a compelling, gripping next installment that rushes along at a breakneck speed.

I don’t know how you could stop reading after this!

So the story continues, unless your reading number two first ??? in which case just no, no just stop now. This is not pulp fiction (90 child) Memento (00/naughties child) it runs in a linear fashion, start at the beginning. So Yorick is a dick but hey I suspect growth will follow.
