One of the X-men's most powerful enemies in the years has been adversary and "hero" for a time but Magneto has always tried to maintain and keep mutant's safe in his own but extreme way.

This is the first of X-Men Black detailing where Magento stands and it's a good first issue. Even though he will most likely be a bad guy again, he is a character that is fascinating to look into and not just in his power set of controlling magnetism.

First backup story of Apocalypse as well! His story will be told throughout this 5 issue run.

I'm always shocked by how few superhero stories use their power fantasy try to alleviate the tremendous brokenness of our world. Back before superheroes were megacorporations Jewish writers made many of them explicitly to beat up Nazis and the KKK providing much-needed escapism and catharsis. These characters are inherently political and I crave stories that live up to that legacy more often. Anyway, Magneto is rad and a canonical antifascist who rips open government concentration camps like the ones by the southern border. Love it.

It was very nice to read a Chris Claremont X-Men related comic from 2018. I loved the conversation between Erik and Kate. Though, I do wish that Erik hadn't compared her to Kitty Pryde so early in their conversation. Perhaps later, when they were outside. Also, I wish the Apocalypse side story hadn't been in the issue. I would have preferred if the issue had been completely written by Chris Claremont.

There were a couple good moments, so I bumped it up one star, but this is also a Chris Claremont tale - and I expected more. I got it through the Marvel Insider program: you get points for doing things, then can get things like digital comics. I was hoping that Claremont writing Magneto, my favorite X-Men villain, would be a win for me. It.... was not.

There was so much virtue signaling. Which, I mean, yeah, it's Magneto's whole schtick, but this was just written so badly - so much message overtaking the story - that I couldn't believe Claremont had written it. His usual subtlety was thrown right out the window, and I cringed many, many times.

Add to that the fact that I wasn't crazy about the art? Yup, just a hard pass on more of this. Looked it up, and looks like the 'Black' line is just bunch of one-shots, but after this I want no part in the rest of the line.

Also, the backstory was about one of my least favorite X-Men villains, Apocalypse, so I don't even care what happens with that. Oh, well, onto better reads!
