4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 289 ratings

In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war…The saga of WARHAMMER 40,000 comes to Marvel Comics! MARNEUS CALGAR, the legendary Chapter Master of the Ultramarines, leads his elite Space Marines against humanity’s greatest threats in a galaxy engulfed in endless war. Kieron Gillen (UNCANNY X MEN, JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY, The Wicked + The Divine) spearheads the initiative with this introductory miniseries, illustrated by Jacen Burrows (PUNISHER: SOVIET, MOON KNIGHT, Crossed)--and we’re just getting started! Now, witness Marneus Calgar’s never-before-told origin story, from his beginnings on Nova Thulium, to his campaigns in the Black Crusades, and to the unfolding mystery of the BLACK ALTAR, as a deadly threat from his past reemerges to threaten the present of the Ultramar system. This all-new tale is essential reading for 40K aficionados, as well as the perfect primer to the world of WARHAMMER 40,000 for those new to the universe. See the Ultramarines in glorious combat, the strife between the worlds of the Imperium, and witness the larger than life characters who preside over it all! This is but the first foray into the larger darkness that is to come from Warhammer and Marvel Comics. Be prepared.

Gillen's first graphic novel, PHONOGRAM (with artist/co-creator Jamie McKelvie), was published through IMAGE COMICS in 2006. Since then he's found work writing for MARVEL, AVATAR, BOOM, TOKYOPOP, DYNAMITE and more that don't spring to mind right now.

Books he's created included UBER, MERCURY HEAT and THREE, but is best known for the ongoing gods-as-popstar series with long time collaborators Jamie McKelvie and Matt Wilson THE WICKED + THE DIVINE launched to both huge critical and commercial success in 2014. It will conclude in 2019.

He is working on other things.

In his previous life as a critic, his work has appeared in WIRED, THE GUARDIAN, PLAYSTATION MAGAZINE UK, PC GAMER, EDGE and far too many others to count. In 2007 he was one of the founders of ROCKPAPERSHOTGUN.COM, what is now the world's premier PC-centric games blog.

He once played records for DMC to rap over.

All I can say is wait till the whole volume is out because it's so darn good. Judge it for yourself but to me it's definitely worth the money.

A really cool read, even if you do not know of or like the Grimdark, you will like this.

This review is for the completed set. I'm a huge comics guy, having read hundreds over the years, and I have to say this is quality stuff. I really enjoyed the art, the writing, and the way the comic was presented overall. It is an easy and accessible read with great pacing.

Who is it for? This part is harder. I am a relatively new fan of the Warhammer 40K universe, but I already had a good foundation of all the setting, all the factions, and general essentials regarding Space Marines and the Imperium. I was, however, not familiar with the specific characters nor all the specifics of the history of the Imperium and specific battles and what not. If you're like me then, this comic is perfect for you, and I highly recommend it. For already hardcore fans of 40K, the disclaimer I would provide is that this comic does seem to assume you know little to nothing of the Warhammer universe, so you might find there is stuff you will skip over because you already know it. With that said, I believe the artwork and the way the information is presented keep it interesting, even if it's stuff you're already familiar with. Finally, is this comic good for someone who knows nothing about Warhammer? That's a tough call. The author obviously provided background information which will help you understand the setting and what's going on even if it's your first exposure to the universe, but I think it might be best if you familiarize yourself at least a little bit with the world before reading this in order to have the full impact.

I read a lot of the 40K novels. I have been interested but a little trepidatious to read the Marvel Comics. First issue is off to a good start, I must say!

This comic depicts the Chapter master of the Ultramarines and i can only say that this storyline is just bad and shows how too much freedom of writing whatever you want about a pg that has like 30 years of background just isn't that ideal! I now truly understand all the complaining about this comic and it really pains me that i had to spend 5 euros and change to get it...
