Joe F@$king Madureira mixed it up on a otherwise blandly drawn comic. His art kicks ass, the man could draw paint drying and it would rock. I love when superheroes look like real super humans and not office workers on Halloween. Jeph Loeb takes the story and injects it with some color, somewhat of a soap opera like feel. Let me put it out there, the first two ultimates reeked of armature art and writing, I don't bow down to the alter of Millar and Hitch and worship them as gods for the mediocre work they do. This time the ultimates were in a world of their own without the injection of reality like the past volumes, I'm fine with the taking a alt-universe angle and starting out fresh on Marvels flagship titles, but just simply dropping the avengers' into a real life setting is sloppy.

Really enjoyable story and art, but wow what a great setup for Ultimatum (which was terrible). This should have been longer and replaced Ultimatum, because it seems simple but unwinds and twists into something else. Really good stuff here, just wish it had gone longer.

I love The Ultimates and Marvel Ultimate imprint, before Ultimatum era.
I always love Joe Mad artworks...
So, for me, this book is a perfect combination, one combo.

Okay, the story is so bad, exactly like the other reviewers said it. But if you are a Joe Mad fans, this book is made for you. It's the book which you can find Joe Mad drawing all pages (not like Inhuman where his work is continued by other artist). Also this is a book where the story is completed (not like Battle Chaser).
The only drawback, in my opinion, is the coloring. To match to other Ultimate books, Christian Lightner should color it like he did on Battle Chaser.

So, this book is recommended if you want to enjoy Joe Madureira artwork.

Eh. this was ok. I didn't hate it, but i didn't love it. Part of it is we were really spoiled by the first few volumes of Ultimate's I guess. But the story was so discombobulated and directionless. I mean so many times i had to stop to see if i missed something because things just didn't make sense. for example without spoiling the plot. Wolverine wants to find out who killed Scarlet Witch because he once slept with her Mother once. not a long tem relationship. They meet, they have sex, something happens and they never see each othe again. so because of that they have some connection? and how the hell did he get there so fast in the first place? She dies and like 10 minutes later Wolverine shows up. And whats with the black panther? Do the ultimate's always just accept new members they know nothing about? members who don't speak? How did they even know his name was teh black panther? Did he write it on a chalk board for them. "Hi i'm the black Panter. i don't speak. I wont show you my face or tell my you my name but you can trust me". Is thee no screening process. Maybe i show up in spandex and a mask and become an Ultimate too.

I loved Long Halloween, but that was a long long time ago it seems. Loeb just doesn't have a good grip on the Marvel universe, nor the ultimate universe obviously. Why doesn't he just come out and admit the reason he destroyed the ultimate universe with Ultimatum is because He just didn't get what it was supposed to be about but his ego won't let him. Oh well. this could have just as easily been an Avengers story. Actually it pretty much was an Avengers story. too bad the Ultimates AREN'T the Avengers Loeb!!!!!!

The art was good though. I know some people don't care for the "every hero looks like he's on steroids and every female is super hot" style but hey, its a comic book. The art is a bit "busy" though. I agree with the first reviewer. Looks like they drew a bunch of cool pictures than made a story out of it.

Buy it for the art. The story won't kill you but it wont really entertain you either. It's kind of like watching the mentalist or Castle or one of those formula TV shows. In the beginning someone dies, at the end they solve who does it, the majority of the middle is just filler and distraction to kill time til the end and an hour later you won't even remember what it was about.

Fun story. Nice twist. Madureira's art work is unrealistically amazing. Lots of cool characters involved.

Con: wish it was longer. I enjoyed it so much I wish it had been a longer read.

Another great written book; don’t know where the continuation is in relationship to Ultimates 2, but it as good a pick me up as any of the two other continuations. Don’t get this mixed up with the other ultimate teams though ...you’ll get confused.

1.0 out of 5 stars Utterly Brainless
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 16, 2011
I knew what I was getting into when I bought this title. I had read the various reviews and knew that this book is pretty universally disliked.

I am a huge fan of Mark Millar's excellent Ultimates 1 and 2, and so had avoided this due to its awful reviews. However now that Millar has returned to write Ultimate Comics: Avengers, I felt that I should get this book to fill me in on what has happened in the Ultimates universe before I got the new Ultimate stuff by Millar as I wouldn't know whats going on otherwise.

I have to say that even though I was prepared for this book to be bad it was much, much worse than I thought possible.

All the awesome groundwork done by volumes 1 and 2 is pretty much thrown out of the window. This is utterly brainless stuff with the plot revolving around people punching each other. It reads like a collection of posters which someone has tried to write a story over the top of, with each chapter ending with a group shot of overly muscly heroes posing together for the 'camera'.

What's more this doesn't even follow on from the end of Ultimates 2. Plenty must have happened in the various other Ultimate titles between Ultimates 2 and this book, so this begins with the team completely changed from the previous book. Characters have changed their costumes. Ultimates members have left the group and new ones have joined. None of this is explained so it really feels like you have missed something.

One of the most annoying things to me was that Thor in this book speaks as he does in the regular universe (thee, thou, verily etc). I really can't stand that and was so glad they didn't do that with Ultimate Thor. Also he seems to have aged 20 years and gained 500 pounds of muscle. Even his hammer now looks identical to the original Marvel universe version so what we have here is the original Thor plain and simple. I really hope Millar ignores this and goes back to writing Thor the way he did in his books for Ultimate Comics: Avengers.

Finally the artwork is technically brilliant but has an exaggerated, cartoony quality with overly muscly characters and extreme lighting, which takes away from the realism of the previous titles and doesn't work for me at all.

Everything about this book is awful.

2.0 out of 5 stars The art is the only thing worth seeing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 25, 2011
when I first read ultimate's 1 i was so enthraled the up to date look on the avengers was really cool and this was carried very well by mark miller into ultimate's 2 but then....then came ultimates's 3 an boy oh boy is it bad to quickly explain it magnetos daughter the scarlet witch gets killed and tony starks sex tape with his ex fiance black widow now the sex tape has nothing to do with it their just talking about it at the start and it's forgotten and only a few references are made about it later

The story may be awful an yes it is [ making everything ultimate Thor was and then spitting on it ] but the art truthly is gorgeous and i cant complain on it but even that does not save it so im giving it Two stars go for the art but Not for the story!

2.0 out of 5 stars If Miller & Hitch brought you here, look elsewhere.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 20, 2012
For my money, the Mark Millar / Bryan Hitch Ultimates arc is a high point in comic books. Those two two-part volumes are intelligent and funny, but by no means light on action.

This outing for Marvel's super-squad has a new creative team that betrays that legacy completely.

It doesn't even chime with the continuity of its predecessors: Where does Valkyrie suddenly get her powers? We aren't told.

Nor do I much care for the art. Captain America's head stops immediately above his eyes, leaving no room for brains, and that's a pretty good metaphor for this book.

If you liked the Millar-Hitch Ultimates try seeking out their work on Ultimate Fantastic 4 instead.
