are thery serious with this that mutants were created by the government?
The story begins with Karen Grant (formerly Jean Grey) seeking out a new mutant at her parents' house. Through this introduction we get a bleak reminder of the status of mutants in the Ultimate Universe -- turn yourself in to a detention camp, or be shot on sight. Elsewhere, Kitty Pryde, Iceman, and the Human Torch are hiding out in the Morlock tunnels. Conflict comes in the form of Bishop Stryker, a would-be human Sentinel who can "cure" mutant abilities. Further hijinks ensue when Quicksilver starts giving the President of the United States advice on what to do about the mutant problem. It all starts turning fairly "Days of Future Past" pretty quickly, only without the familiar mutants who would make it palatable to read (e.g., Wolverine, Cyclops, Professor X) since they're all dead. This new generation doesn't amount to much. Without the Professor X/Magneto duality to shape this X-Men book, it's pretty much cat-and-mouse, kill-or-be-killed, run-and-hide, and other action cliches. There's a little bit of witty banter, and a couple of twists, but in the end it's not enough to keep my interest in the Ultimate Universe going. It's obvious that Marvel is trying to create something distinctive and original here, but they're falling desperately short, and they don't even have the 100-year time difference of their previous "2009" universe to provide them a comfortable buffer against being too derivative in their ideas. With the downplay of the Jimmy Hudson character (Wolverine's son) and the utter absence of the Hulk from the book despite his seemingly necessary inclusion in "X", Spencer seems to deliberately swerve off the rails laid down by Loeb and goes off in a direction that is less than satisfying. This volume has become the Ultimate Universe's swan song for me.
