4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 131 ratings

THE POWER OF FATE Tota meets Kiri? Sakurame, a mysterious member of UQ Holder. Kiri? looks like a little girl, but is apparently the wealthy patron of UQ Holder. Tota accompanies her on a trip to the tower to meet Karin (returning from the Moon), but the trip appears to have another purpose. The powerful wizard Fate Averruncus, former ally of Tota's grandfather Negi, wants to take possession of Tota for reasons unknown. Despite having Karin, Ikku, Kiri? and Kuromaru with him, they stand little chance of stopping Fate, who possesses unfathomable power. Why does Fate want Tota? And can Kiri?'s secret plan succeed in stopping him?

Let me first begin by saying that I have read both Love Hina and Negima!, so when it comes to Mr. Akamatsu I am horribly bias. I love the art style and the storyline, I appreciate that while this is set in the same universe as Negima! It is not a straight sequel in the traditional sence. I can't wait to read the next issue.

Another new UQ Holder, and she's little, gorgeous, UQ powerful, and really really rich, not to mention a miniature royal pain!! And it's up to the immortal, (and immortally irritating) Tota to protect the obnoxious little darling!!

Wow! I've been wishy-washy about this series up to this point and wasn't sure if I was going to continue. However, this volume totally amps up the game! All the members of the team are being focused on, even though Tota is the main character, and their backgrounds are explored a little bit here mostly by telling us in what way each is immortal. My favourite at this point is Ikku. This volume is plot and battle intensive. A new bad guy with a mysterious past connection to Tota is introduced and the whole entire book surrounds his nefarious scheme and the UQ team trying to spot him. A new member of the team is also introduced (look at the cover); she's totally awesome with some very cool powers!

After dealing with the immortal hunters and saving the slums, Tōta goes back to UQ Holder's HQ where he becomes even more determined to earn money to pay off his debts and achieve his goals. Things don't remain quiet for long though as, while on a trip to the tower to pick up Karin, things begin to go wrong as an old friend of Tōta's grandfather arrives and has eyes only for Tōta.

This fourth volume of the greatly entertaining 'UQ Holder!' manga is probably the first where some knowledge of 'Negima!' could be helpful for the reader to get all the references and background to the events. Having said this though, new readers shouldn't be worried about losing out as things are explained reasonably well. The end of the slums arc is handled well but the majority of the volume focuses on the next arc that introduces the greatest wizard in the solar system, Fate Averrucus, and another member of UQ Holder, Kirië Sakurame who can use her unique form of immortality to manipulate events. This arc is a very good one with some brilliantly drawn battle scenes as Tōta and his comrades clash with Fate and his followers. Readers of 'Negima!' will be familiar with Fate and it is interesting to see how much he has changed in the intervening years. Kirië is a very interesting character with a nice power and a funny personality once she gets going. The volume also sees Ikkuu Ameya get a bit more focus with some information on his immortality and background.

Overall this was easily the best volume of 'UQ Holder!' so far and is easily worth a full five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique and Exciting Manga Series
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 20, 2015
I still prefer Negima and I wasn't sure at first with this series but I am a huge fan of Ken Akamatsu so I stuck the series out and I'm glad I did. This is really more of a series review than a review of this volume but despite my initial reservations Ken Akamatsu has created an interesting changed world and a unique new main character for the sequel to Negima. I wasn't originally sure whether I liked the main character but having gotten this far he has definitely grown on me. This series although slow in the first volume or so, has quickly picked up pace and by the end of this volume I find myself seriously wishing that volume 5 was already out. If you liked the scale, the magic, the fighting and the exciting plot of Negima you are sure to like this. The fan service is a lot more limited and a lot less diverse (off the top of my head I can only think of 2-3 female characters with fan service so far), but this is probably largely due to increased censorship both in Japan and the world as a whole since Negima was created.

If you liked Negima you’ll love this. Fantastic manga so far, I love the characters, the story and the refined Akamatsu art style. Just don’t read it on a crowded train, it still has occasional fan service...
