Using the vivid, yet previously undocumented, memories of Miguel Ruiz, a Spanish veteran exiled in France, award-winning graphic novelist Paco Roca reconstructs World War II through an international lens. Ruiz was a member of “La Nueve,” a company of men that went straight from fighting for their homeland in the Spanish Civil War to battles spanning the globe in WWII. Their trek across Europe and Africa was spurred on for years by their love for their country and hate for brutal dictatorships. With threads that seamlessly connect the present and the past, Ruiz’s stories that make up Twists of Fate are often filled with both horror and humor, hope and grief, giving those who only know the American side of World War II a brand-new, and often startling, perspective. The artist behind the Eisner-nominated Wrinkles (now a critically acclaimed animated movie on Netflix), Roca returns with a major graphic novel that features his trademark narrative mastery that blends compassion, humanity, and sensitivity. Already winning worldwide awards and being called by one critic “the Spanish Maus,” Twists of Fate is much more than one forgotten hero’s personal story. It’s a necessary and timely look into what we remember and why we forget, a reminder that everyone has a tale to tell, and an

This is a fantastic story, which was well researched, and beautifully written. You see the horrors both of war, and of growing old. The story does not flinch from documenting atrocities. It also shows the camaraderie of the soldiers on the field and the sadness of death that comes to so many in war. Paco Rocca did a fantastic job in both the writing and illustration. A great read documenting a side of WWII and the Spanish Civil war that is not often discussed.

This is the first graphic novel I've read, but it only took a few pages to appreciate the appeal. Twists of Fate is an excellent book about an aspect of WWII that I never found in any of the (many) WWII books I've read over the years. I've already read it twice, the story was so good that I picked up speed as I read, and I was afraid I'd missed some details. I highly recommend it.

Enjoyed the theme, story and presentation. Told the story of the Spanish Civil War Republicans who went to France and fought the Vici French and Nazi’s to liberate Paris under D’Gaul.

Twists of Fate details the trials, travels and World War II adventures of Miguel Ruiz. Miguel was part of the Spanish Republican faction that had been pushed out of Spain in 1939 by the Fascist Franco regime. From there his life takes a meandering route as Miguel is cast from one conflict to the next, until he finds himself with his fellow Spanish Republicans fighting for the liberation of France. The book brings to life an often dismissed historical moment that is invaluable.

El libro trata con delicadeza y ternura las peripecias y sufrimientos de aquellos españoles que debieron partir al exilio y siguieron combatiendo.

Paco Roca is consistently one of the best graphic novelists. This work is an engaging page turner as veterans of the Spanish civil war continue to fight against Fascism during World War II with the hope of ultimately defeating the Franco government. All of the English language translations of his works are worth reading.

I was intrigued and bought the book because I did not realise the Spanish had any part of WWII - naive maybe, but rectified now! We start in Franco's Spain, then move to Africa and then onto Europe and the liberation of Paris. A great novel full of characters and their quirks, superb narrative and lovely drawings. I'd love to see more background on the research process as it sounds fascinating. BRILLIANT historical book and graphic novel
