"It is the book I would love to write myself... they capture the true atmosphere of the Manila I know and love"
- WHILCE PORTACIO

"If you know nothing about Filipino horror and the monsters that lurk within, this is the place to start." --Book Riot

"The four stories are accompanied by in-depth fact sheets about the amazing creatures we meet, and to close Tan gives us the backstory of Trese and how it eventually ended up as a show. It rounds off a winner in every way, exotic, glamorous and beguiling."--theslingsandarrows.com

"Budjette and Kajo's Trese is a gem. It excites the little child in me which used to believe in the wonders of Filipino folklore, and my adult self who enjoys intelligently written and drawn tales."
- LEINIL YU

"Trese continues to impress and surprise."
- GERRY ALANGUILAN, CREATOR OF THE AWARD-WINNING GRAPHIC NOVEL ELMER

"supernatural elements lend the story a strong horror vibe, which is accentuated by the grisly, black-and-white art." -

Review

Tan and Baldisimo's series of supernatural noir explores a sinister underworld in the Philippines, now published for the first time in the U.S. Alexandra Trese pursues a criminal gang of aswang-monsters who can take human form. A trail of gruesome deaths in Manila (a woman burned alive in an unscorched room, a man drained of life in a nightclub bathroom)lead the Manila police to realize otherworldly forces are at play, and they call in Alexandra. Her grandfather befriended aswang and her father hunted them, and the unflappable Alexandra navigates arcane alliances and rivalries along with her complicated heritage. With the aid of a menagerie of Filipino folklore creatures and her two masked enforcers, Alexandra finds and eliminates the creatures. The haunting, fine-lined black-and-white art evokes the style of Filipino artists like Nestor Redondo and Alex Nuño. Real-world political parallels could be read between the blurred lines of Alexandra's world and the current wave of government-sanctioned extrajudicial killings in the Philippines. Whether that's intentional, there's complexity layered in: the "bad guys" may be monsters, but their killing at the hands of a vigilante and her deadly enforcers plumbs troubled waters. The unconventional monster art and moody, action-packed narratives make this horror-crime series a must-follow for any aficionado of the macabre. (Oct.)--Publishers Weekly

Amazing comic for those who love mystery, horror and mythology!

Amazing comic for those who love mystery, horror and mythology!
As a Filipino -American , I’m glad to see this be part of American comic community! As a first time reader, I’m glad I found out about this! I’m amazed to see Filipino mythology is finding a fresh place in the comic industry and maybe a new Netflix series! I remember hearing mythological and ghost stories about the many creatures featured in Trese from my Grandma and parents. As someone who actually went to Manila, it’s nice to see a city be featured not as generic as other American or European cities or something exotic. The Manila in Trese shines a new light from its gritty yet lively atmosphere that feels like something out of a film noir setting. Overall, the illustrations and text looks great on the phone (ComiXology). The is a good mix of mystery and supernatural that will make you want to read and learn more about Filipino mythology!!

My son really enjoyed this and has asked for more. He usually finds it challenging to engage in reading with his autism and adhd combination. If these can hold his attention then I’m sure everyone would love them. Thank you so much for selling these they brought him a great joy

A great set of stories full of interesting characters rooted in Filipino mythology. There is not enough of this type of content out there! Tik Balang, the White Lady, Asawng, loved it. Some people do not care for black and white graphic novels, I am one of them. But in this case, the contrast lends to the story and gives it a very classic noir kind of feel.

I initially just bought this to familiarize myself with the story in anticipation of its tv adaptation on Netflix. As a supporter of the Filipino VA Liza Soberano, I also love the book, my kids also loved it. Excited for vol 2 and 3. Thumbs up.

I love art style. The drawings are unique and new to me. The introduction to Filipino folklore has me wanting more. The animated series on Netflix introduced me to this comic. Can’t wait for more of both.

I didn't think I'd ever read a US released book about detecting filipino horrors but here we are.

I'm obviously biased to support something that is rooted to my child home and country of origin but I do think this is an interesting premise with creatures every different from what we're used to.

I do wish the writing was a wee bit better. I'm not sure if it's mostly due to the monster of the week vibe but I was looking for something a bit deeper. I hope we get a lot more stories in this since I think Metro Manila is such a fanatic setting with how old and weird and urbanized and mishmash of cultures.

This make me really interested for the next volume and checking out the Netflix show.

The Filipino manga on which the Netflix anime series is based, Trese is a series featuring a young woman named Alexandra Trese - whose job is preserving the balance between our world and The Other (my words).

Set in contemporary Manila, Volume One contains four stories - all unique and based on Filipino mythology, with a dash of police procedural and a tone influenced by many sources but, notably, Kolchak: The Night Stalker and X-Files (with a dash of CSI).

Each story is followed by a few pages from the files of Trese's late father, Alexander, and provides background on the various mythological entities we encounter in those stories.

Great, dark, fun.

Awesome graphic novel! The art is fantastic and it takes you through the story seemlessly! Bought this for my husband and he loves it, he's half-pinoy, half-german and is fascinated with filipino folklore, so this is the perfect gift for him. I love how the folklore itself is integrated into a modern-day Manila murder mystery. A pretty good read! Hope the next volumes will be available here too.

The comic itself is good but the copy I got was all wrinkled and appeared worn-out. Looks like they gave me a used one instead of a new one which I ordered. Hey @Amazon, hope you do something about this.
