This a very straightforward and traditional story of a coming of age quest. The art is beautiful throughout this volume, from start to finish. The characters, their relationships, and situations are not revolutionary but instead universally relatable and expressed very well. This is a steal for the entire series at a low price!

Having read this a long time ago when it was first published, I was somewhat hesitant to revisit it. The reason for this is that I've often found that when I've revisited things I once liked, I frequently find myself asking myself why? It's not always the fault of the work but sometimes it's that the passage of time has rendered the storytelling or the dialogue obsolete and, quite embarrassingly, cringeworthy.

Son of Asgard I'm happy to say holds up exceptionally well.

It should be prefaced that Son of Asgard is the story of a young Thor. Surrounded by the young familiar faces of Balder, Sif and the ever-conniving Loki, the story transports us onto many epic journeys through all sorts of beautifully rendered lands. The heart of this lies in the wonder the story instills in us and the heartfelt nature of the struggles of the characters. Their conflicts, their successes, their failures and ultimately their unity is what defines the story The action sequences are well scripted without the problem of talking heads. The subtext is not as complex and thematic as say other great graphic novels but Thor: Son of Asgard casts no illusions that it will offer that. What it is, is a enthralling read where you are transported to a whole new place and fall in love with the characters and their struggles within that world.

The art leaps of the page and the colouring strikes a wonderful balance between energy and a sense of history. The youthful exuberance of the characters is wonderfully captured in their facial expressions and their reactions to one another. There are sequences of no dialogue or narration that are just so much powerful because of the art and its ability communicate presence, courage and determination. Then let me not overlook the way in which Toccini captures the elements. When our characters enter the different lands, the life of those lands is immediately communicated. You feel the freezing cold, the blistering heat and the verdant landscapes that the Nine Worlds have to offer.

Thor: Son of Asgard is a wonderful piece of work. It is a story about a boy grappling with expectation. A boy who will one day become the standard by which others judge themselves yet a boy in that time struggling to define himself. It is in these journeys and these struggles though that give we find out true hero. His ability to learn from his mistakes and his own frailties are what make him a character we wish to follow. But don't forget his supporting cast. Their development and progress alongside a young Thor is what helps make this a truly epic read.

I bought this collection of comic books a little while back. It wouldn't be fair to compare it to the Thor comic books or other graphic novels about Thor. These are stories of how he came to win Mjolnir. They are a good collection of stories. The artwork is superb, by far above what you see in comic books or even other graphic novels. I had also bought the individual comics at first but couldn't get them all so I wound up buying this from a friend's comic book store. The same level of artwork was in the comic books as are in this graphic novel.

For any fan of Thor, I would recommend getting this. You will enjoy the stories, they follow each other very well. You will definitely enjoy the artwork. You will be impressed with Odin's trophy room as well as other sites around the palace of Asgard.

This is one to buy.

Many of the greatest stories in the years that Marvel has been publishing the tales of Thor have involved the God of Thunder off on some quest. Sometimes, friends and fellow sojourners accompany him, while in others, he meets up with allies along the way – or some combination of the two.

Thor, Son of Asgard, collects the stories of the first quest that a young Thor undertook. Father Odin shipped him off to gather materials needed to forge a great sword. His best friends and companions, Balder and Sif, joined him in a quest not only to gather items but to learn to work, fight, and live together – with the added complication of Thor's half-brother, Loki, providing his usual levels of interference.

This book, taking 6 issues of a traditional comic book, contains a beginning, middle, and end, along with all of the technical ingredients that they teach in creative writing classes that are necessary to tell an effective story. (This reviewer has a pet peeve with graphic novel reprints that simply grab X issues of an ongoing comic book without regard as to whether the collected work can stand on its own as an independent tale or tales. A special section of Hel – to use the Norse concept – exists for publishers who start a graphic novel in the middle of something and/or end it with a cliffhanger.)

Perfect? Not necessarily. BUT the tale held my attention and the interaction and development of the teenaged gods seemed in character with the adults they grew into, according to Marvel canon. The art was both attractive and propelled the story along. Together, those are the main aspects that I would expect when reading a story told in the comic panel/page format.
