Spinning off visionary writer Warren Ellis’ critically acclaimed saga The Wild Storm comes a bold new reimagining of one of comics’ most legendary assassins!
Michael Cray has a knife in his back and an alien life-form in his head. His masters at International Operations have betrayed him. The entity in his skull is either killing him or transforming him—or both. All he can do is the one thing he does best: kill his targets.
But these targets are like none he’s ever faced.
Oliver Queen: a sociopathic Silicon Valley billionaire who hunts humans for sport.
Barry Allen: a paranoid police officer with a speed suit and a trail of broken bodies behind him.
Arthur Curry: a deep-sea scientist who’s transforming himself into something more monster than man.
One by one, Michael must enter these murderers’ killing fields and take them out on their own turf. Only then can he turn the tables on his treacherous overlords before time runs out …
Don’t miss a single battle as the assassin takes on twisted versions of the Justice League’s greatest heroes in The Wild Storm: Michael Cray Vol. 1, from the creative team of Bryan Hill (Postal), N. Stephen Harris (Watson and Holmes) and Dexter Vines (Superman/Batman)! Collects The Wild Storm: Michael Cray #1-6.
“Michael Cray knows what type of book it is and doesn’t lose focus along the way: all killer, no filler.” —Comicosity

Praise for THE WILD STORM:
"In many ways, the Superhero Boom began with Ellis and Wildstorm."--Vulture
"THE WILD STORM doesn't read like any Wildstorm comic that's come before... it's a sci-fi-flavored espionage book, one that takes a handful of familiar faces, remixes them and generally re-imagines the Wildstorm Universe to suit a more contemporary and jaded audience." --IGN
"The story is just told with scalpel-like precision and that's something of a hallmark for a good Ellis tale." --Newsarama
"Warren Ellis is arguably the comic industry's greatest living science-fiction writer.... With its lethal, quippy protagonist, corporate espionage set-up, and well, robots, THE WILD STORM is a fine gateway drug into the Ellis oeuvre." --Paste Magazine
"One of the most exciting superhero projects of this year" --A.V. Club

I've been a fan of Michael Cray since he was known as Deathblow. Wildstorm Comic! Great character: flawed assassin with something weird going on in his head. The only problem I had when this collection was the art! Wow, it's awful in some places. Distorted heads, faces, and bodies. Even seemed unfinished in some places. Michael Cray deserved better. The story needed something grittier. Darker. The writing here was good, though. Art is subjective, so don't let that dissuade you from picking this up--you just might like it.

I was pleasantly surprised by the writing here, as I am not very familiar with Bryan Hill. I thought the writing was spot on. I can see the other reviewers' points about art, but since I care more about plot, characterization, and dialogue than I do art, I thought this was pretty fantastic. An assassin with good intentions (killing only to prevent further killings) hunts down alternate versions of DC characters. I quite enjoyed it and suggest picking it up. I never thought the art was awful or off-putting enough to outweigh the great story.

The story concept, as the first spin-off of "The Wild Storm" reboot, isn't bad. But, that every single white person in the story is a villain of some sort, the only "good" people are non-whites, and some VERY uncomfortable re-imaginings of classic DC characters make this the only volume of the series that I am going to buy. Pass.

Wish I could rate this better, because the concept is original and inspiring, but the quality is embarrassing. Honestly, with no exaggeration, this art work is amateurish. No pleasure at all in giving this one star; I think Wildstorm is one of the best comics universes and Bryan Hill does great work with it...but this is not professional work. Sorry.

Deathblow was one of my favorite characters from the original Wildstorm universe. This bland and forced reimagining of the concept was too painful to finish. Uninteresting art depicts cardboard snarky characters in a story that is supposed to be more grounded, but only succeeds at rushing through the mundane gimmick of killing ones darlings.

I bought this book for two reasons: 1) I loved the fact that Warren Ellis bought the Wildstorm Universe back in The Wild Storm series and 2) Deathblow has always been a favorite Wildstorm character of mine.
Although the original Michael Cray was a white man, I don't really see a problem with how Warren reinvented him as a Black man, being Alan Moore basically did the same thing in the Deathblow Byblows series when he made him a Black woman.
I think Brian Hill did a great job writing this series as well as the art team. Denys Cowan did great covers. I loved the supporting cast, especially Christine Trelane and are those the Deviants, Frostbite and Powerhaus, as well as Flint from Stormwatch as his backup team?
In this volume, Michael faces distorted versions of everyone from The Flash to Aquaman in an attempt to collect their technological marvels for Ms. Trelane and her superiors. But this usually ends with Michael destroying the technology to keep it out of Ms. Trelane's hands.
I loved this series and am sad that The whole Wild Storm project Mr. Ellis planned was derailed.

This is interesting enough for me to want the next volume. It’s good but not great.
