Editorial Reviews

Review

"The Wake is as close to an ideal comic book as I've come across. The text and visuals come together in an unsettling sort of harmony, while the tightly paced plot is guaranteed to pull you under."—IGN

Praise for Scott Snyder's BATMAN VOL. 1: THE COURT OF OWLS:

"A+. The hero's got personality (and is unafraid to release a quip as sharp as a Batarang), a horde of supervillains, gumption to spare and a whole host of high-tech gadgetry to suitably impress longtime fans and those new to the Dark Knight."—
USA TODAY

Praise for Sean Murphy's PUNK ROCK JESUS:

"Amazing. The series has been incredible right from the beginning and it ends in a spectacular fashion. It's brilliant and heartbreaking, epic and emotional.... This is book that makes you think.... Don't miss one of the best series of 2012."

I write comic books! Growing up, I always wanted to write comics, but I ended up trying my hand at fiction first. I got my MFA from Columbia University, published a book of short stories with The Dial Press in 2006 called Voodoo Heart, then finally broke into comics in 2009 and haven't looked back since. I've worked extensively for DC Comics, writing such titles as Batman, Detective Comics, Justice League, the comic event books DC Dark Knights Metal and Death Metal, and Swamp Thing, among others. I've also created a number of series with some great co-creators and partners -- books like We Have Demons, Clear, Night of the Ghoul, Nocterra, American Vampire, Wytches, the Wake, AD: After Death, and more... I live in NY with my wife, Jeanie and our three boys. I am also a big fan of Elvis Presley.

The wake is a mix of both horror and sci-fi as the story unfolds across two different time periods. The first is Dr. Lee Archer who embarks on a journey to study a new discovery in a deep water research facility where all is not at it seems. The second story takes place in a flooded post apocalyptic world, where the world is a much more savage place as humanity fights over the remaining landmass and resources. Seeing how these two stories intersect and combine is the true mystery. Scott Synder crafts a complex tale that transitions from horror to post apocalyptic in a matter of pages. While a lesser writer might just be content with a simple horror troupe, Synder manages to swing in themes about where humanity comes from, search for existence, fear of the unknown, and other complex ideas that Synder is known for. Synder has knocked out pretty much any comic he has written, with his ongoing run on Batman with Greg Capullo, and his continuing vertigo series American Vampire with Rafael Albuquerque being great series. The wake is more similar to American Vampire, in its dark and twisted nature. Synder does a good job establishing two different protagonists and two different worlds for the reader to explore. Lee Archer is a strong mother who would do anything to see her son again, while Leeward is a tough rebel trying to find meaning in a flooded world. And not to mention Dash, pretty much the greatest dolphin I have ever seen in comics.
Sean Murphy, who collaborated with Scott Synder on American Vampire: Survival of the Fittest, does a remarkable job bring Synder's twisted visions to life. The first half is covered in shadow and darkness, as Murphy sells the claustrophobia and dread lurking in the deep. However its the second half of the book that Murphy really shows his power. The flooded landscapes are amazingly detailed, and I poured over every image just to get a look at this this fully functional world. Murphy creates both great character models but can also capture scenes on a massive scale, detailing destruction and death that is beautiful as it is terrifying. Matt Hollingsworth's colors add a lot of emotion to Murphy's pencils, from the shrouded depths of the ocean to the tropical and sundrenched locals of the future.
Overall the Wake is a masterpiece, with Scott Synder and Sean Murphy making a great story collected in this hardcover. The only complaint I have is that I wish it was longer in parts, but Scott has said in interviews he would love to revisit this world. Some extras at the end show off Murphy's sketches, and Hollingsworth's process of coloring. Its nothing special, but it adds value. The Wake is a great story with great art, and seeing Dash the Dolphin alone warrants a purchase.

Rated R if it were a movie…Some profanity and some nudity, this can be a plus, a minus, or neutral depending on your preferences.

The Wake essentially tells two stories. One story takes place in present time and the other story takes place 200 years later. Both stories (and their protagonists) are profoundly linked to each other in several ways; most notably through the Mers, a mysterious species of aquatic creatures.
Overall it's pretty intriguing and intense. The first half of the story reminded me of the movie The Abyss (one of my favorite movies of all time). If you liked The Abyss, you’ll like this story; same eerie under watery tone. The second half reminded me of the movie Waterworld (despite being a bad movie, Scott Snyder takes that similar concept and makes it way better).

Sean Murphy’s art is gritty and awesome, it really fits the tone of Scott Snyder's story especially in the second half. Scott Snyder is currently one of my favorite comic book writers. I would recommend you pick this one up. It’s good.

Let's be clear, the most controversial topic surrounding this story is ITS ENDING. When you build up a story's tension only to relieve your audience's anxiety with deus ex machina, you'll lose them ten out of ten times. Which, make no mistake, is a big deal. How epics conclude should a) satisfy the needs of its audience and b) serve as a commentary about who we are. I have given 4 Stars to THE WAKE as I see it accomplishing one out of the two options listed.

Science Fiction serves as a commentary of the human condition. Authors use the genre as a catalyst in talking about human nature and how we can better improve ourselves and society. Snyder's conclusion to this epic, although not quite satisfying, aims to say a lot about life and who we are. It ends with something not too dissimilar to what Marlin says to his son at the end of Finding Nemo, "Now go have an adventure!" Even so, deus ex machina is best served as a story plot and not an ending as it leaves your audience unsatisfied with feelings of betrayal. It's as though they've just been cheated out of a good story. The ending to a story is key to its success; it's half the battle.

Still you'll continue to ask me, "Is THE WAKE worth my read?" and I'll answer with a resounding "YES."

Make no mistake, THE WAKE's narrative is engaging, exciting and cinematic by nature; basing its structure on the hero's journey. So if you're going to read it, please read the collection as it'll give you the full experience you were meant to enjoy. It's fast paced and fascinating from book end to book end. Likewise, the characters are dynamic and complex creatures bringing you to levels empathy not often achieved in the genre. As far as visuals go, they don't get much better than this. The art of Murphy is only enhanced by Hollingsworth's colors and is, in my opinion, just what the doctor ordered to tell a Sci-Fi epic such as this.

On a personal note, I wish more comics were more like this. In the age of cinema, it's amazing what the paradigm can teach us.

The book is beautiful obviously and even though the story felt rushed, it kept me wanting to turn the pages because it was worth every second :-)

Snyder and Murphy are a truly good combination. The storyline is indeed pretty scary at the beginning. But the horror tapers off. And is soon replaced by cliches. A good book nevertheless, it is an interesting piece of read to occupy the horror comic urges.
