The Salaryman (MANGA ISSUE #1): A hilarious manga series about an American guy's struggle to fit into Japanese business culture. Kindle & comiXology

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 15 ratings

"Laugh-out-loud humor...The best English manga available." - Voices in Japan podcast

No word encapsulates a country’s mainstream lifestyle the way “salaryman” does in Japan. If a Japanese person asks you, “What do you do?” and you reply, “I’m a salaryman,” you’ll likely get a laugh and a knowing look, as they'll instantly understand the office rituals, refined manners, and nocturnal consumption that dominate your life. In this manga, based on the best-selling memoir of the same name, American author Michael Howard distills his decade spent as a "immigrant salaryman" into a hilarious comic about Tokyo office life. Each issue is full of painfully funny and insightful truths about modern salaryman life, revealing much about the US–Japan culture gap.

1.0 out of 5 stars It was free, so...

I've got it free as a way to test both how the Kindle would deal with the inverse page turn of a manga and the panel by panel view for comics. Other than that, I can think of no use for this.

4.0 out of 5 stars A cute, though a bit messy, start of a cool story

I read this manga in a single take. Really fast read. The story is easy to understand and obviously personal. I feel attached to the MC and the position he's found himself in.

The art is good, although the formatting seems to have gone wrong as the pages don't cover the whole display, hence the smaller text is hard to read.

I feel like the subscenes within chapter 1 could have been individual chapters, but maybe that's just me.

I hope to see more published soon.

I accidentally read it on the bus and found it so funny that it was really hard to hold back my laughter.
I wondered how I would feel if I was suddenly thrown into Japanese society one day without any knowledge or experience?!
I was drawn in by the author's unique style of comically conveying Japanese society from a perspective that Japanese people born and raised in Japan do not have and read it in one sitting.
Looking forward to the sequel!
