"An engulfing and entertaining read" - SciFi And Scary

About the Author

James Cawthorn drew the very first Elric illustration, and his artwork-designs often provided visual assistance for characters and scenes in the Hawmoon novels.

Michael Moorcock’s The Chronicles of Hawkmoon graphic novel series is a fanciful experience where science and magic meet. There’s a little something for everyone, whether you’re a fan of fantasy or looking for high action. If you enjoyed the Conan series, you’ll appreciate Hawkmoon which shares an equally enthralling story and sense of adventure.

I loved this story world. Science and magic collide creating a unique brand of warfare. There are spheres that release hallucinatory gasses, flying flamingos as a common mode of transportation, war dragons and magical crystals. Dorian Hawkmoon Von Koln is an admirable hero with a strong sense of honor. He often finds himself outnumbered, but his strength and a bit of magic help him defeat evil. A black jewel is implanted in Hawkmoon’s forehead against his will by the evil forces of Granbretan, which is a dark empire taking over Europe. Hawkmoon is sent to spy on Kamarg, Granbretan’s enemy. What Hawkmoon sees, his enemy sees, but Hawkmoon finds a way to disable the jewel and fight for the forces of good.

The action moves quick and is complimented by vivid illustrations that bring the narrative to life. James Cawthorn’s black and white artwork creates tension and a sense of urgency. The action panels spring to life while conveying the death and destruction of the scene. At one point, Hawkmoon pairs up with Olahdan, a member of the Mountain Giants. There are many creatures to enjoy in this graphic novel, but the artwork of Olahdan is my favorite. He’s a hairy little beast man, fierce but friendly. Cawthorn created this juxtaposition perfectly.

While I found this to be an engulfing and entertaining read, it was a bit confusing at first. I had to reread the beginning panels a few times to figure out who was good, who was evil, and which kingdom they were fighting for. But once I got it straight, I was on board and eager to travel the world with Hawkmoon and to fight the dark powers. If you like fantasy, give it a try.
