4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 72 ratings

Master storyteller Jane Yolen (Owl Moon, Sword of the Rightful King) and celebrated fantasy artist Rebecca Guay (Swamp Thing, Magic: The Gathering) weave a textured and lyrical tale of adventure, homelands, and heroism the hard way.

Two hundred years ago, humans drove the dragons from the islands of May. Now, the last of the dragons rises to wreak havoc anewwith only a healer's daughter and a kiteflying wouldbe hero standing in its way.

* A compelling coming of age fantasy with exquisite fully painted art!

"Romantic artwork, rich and elegant in color, powerful in design and line, gives vivid life to this tale of a young village couple outwitting a dragon." Ursula K. LeGuin

"When one of the world's great fabulists teams with a charming artist to create a graphic album, you expect something special, and you get it. Sometimes funny, sometimes horrifying, sometimes adventurous—this is what fantasy is supposed to be." Will Shetterly

This turned out to be something that I have really enjoyed and know others would like it just as I have.
This trade/graphic novel is one that I'll read more than once. It will be staying in my collection always.

Item is clear and great. Story is dependent on who warrants what kind of narrative but images look clear and the book is big for nice full pictures.

Many reviewers here have celebrated the artwork in this book, but I disagree somewhat with all the high praise. The art early in the book is finely detailed with nuanced color. In these pages the book is gorgeous to look at. Somewhat later, though, the quality noticeably falls off as the line work gets thicker and the backgrounds more bare. At several points the faces look rushed, with eyes misaligned at times, and figures look more sketched than finished. The problem is that this decline in detail and consistency comes at those moments when the story needs the most help from dramatic artwork.

A great high fantasy tale with a strong female character who - along with a found "hero" - saves the town and the day. The illustrations are spectacular!

Centuries ago, humans drove the last of the dragons from islands and took them as their own and built their homes and villages on the islands. Now, the last of the dragons, lost as an egg for two hundred years, has been born and it's up the the village healer's daughter and a would-be hero to devise a way to dispose of the dragon before it destroys the village.

I'm not going to lie. I felt bad for the dragon. It was only living it's life, doing what dragons do, eating the livestock and occasional villager, just making its lonely way on the island, and the villagers decide that it needs to be killed. Humans can be so pushy sometimes.

All kidding aside, the story is actually quite lyrical and Rebecca Guay's art is gorgeous. I don't think story would stand up nearly as well on its own if it wasn't for the art. This is neither a long nor challenging read, so I'd recommend it with 4 stars, if not for just the art alone.

Such a beautiful book

I gave this three stars ONLY for Rebecca Guay's artwork.
Absolutely gorgeous.

The storytelling was horrible.
The dialogue was stilted and there was NO flow from panel to panel.
I was very disappointed because Jane Yolen is a good novelist....

I'm keeping it because of the art, and nothing else.

3.0 out of 5 stars A solid story with credible characters

It's possible that Ursula K. Leguin's endorsement gave me unrealistic expectations: I must confess I was a bit disappointed with this book.

The tale is actually fairly well-written; the female characters are especially believable. It is not, however, a terribly action-packed story -- and it almost certainly wasn't meant to be.

If nothing else, buy this book for Rebecca Guay's art, which is stunning. If you are looking for medieval mayhem, you had best look for
Demon Knights or possibly the  Game of Thrones  adaptations.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lovely art, but the story is a bit lacking.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 24, 2012
In the perfect graphic novel type book both the art and the story combine to produce something wonderful. Here the artwork is wonderful, but the story is just a little flat. I liked it, but I never loved it.

4.0 out of 5 stars
Reviewed in Japan on August 3, 2013
