Stan Lee is a man who needs no introduction. Nevertheless: Having begun his career with wartime Timely Comics and staying the course throughout the Atlas era, Stan the Man made comic-book history with Fantastic Four #1, harbinger of a bold new perspective in story writing that endures to this day. With some of the industry’s greatest artists, he introduced hero after hero in Incredible Hulk, Amazing Spider-Man, X-Men and more — forming a shared universe for rival publishers to measure themselves against. After an almost literal lifetime of writing and editing, Lee entered new entertainment fields and earned Marvel one opportunity after another. He remains one of Marvel’s best-known public representatives.

-----------------

If you loved the Fantastic Four back in the early sixties, you most likely were reading Strange Tales when the Human Torch came along, only to get even better when they teamed him up with everybody's favorite The Thing! Well here they are again all in a fantastic (pun?) collection with the Marvel Epic line. So much fun to read again! I think I actually began to live my kid time all over again with joy! If you loved Johnny Storm or Bashful Blue-eyed Ben Grimm....you need to stop reading this review and order yourself a copy right now!

I bought this book to go with my Fantastic Four Marvel Essential books because I like The Human Torch. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the book was entirely in color,I had no idea that it was in color. The villains in the stories,The Wizard,Sandman,Paste-Pot Pete (The Trapster),The Mad Thinker, and The Puppet Master might not be the most exciting villains but they are well known in the Marvel universe! Kang the conqueror even makes an appearance! Overall I am very pleased with this book and think it was a great value for the price.

Strange Tales, which started out like it's similar counterparts: Tales to Astonish , and Tales of Suspense, originally had all sorts of silly monster tales with outlandish names, many of them from the mind of Jack Kirby.

When the superhero craze took over at Marvel, they started inserting them everywhere in place of the monster stories, and so, The Torch was given the feature story of Strange Tales. Delving into his character and powers more than just in the Fantastic Four comic, they were ingenious and interesting stories.

Halfway through the run feature in this collection, Dr. Strange started sharing the book and it became on the three Marvel double story lines. When the torch finally ran out in Strange Tales, it was replaced by Nick Fury , Agent of
Shield.

But longtime Marvel fans should enjoy these reprints that show the Torch having to use his head along with his powers and accomplishing things on his own without relying on his super powered buddies in the Fantastic Four.

This is a fantastic full color reprint book. It is the Human Torch and later they added the Thing to boost sales. When they made the Fantastic Four Lee and Kirby they thought the Human Torch would be the stand out star. And so they gave him a solo series in the Strange Tales issues. This volume contains all those issues and the complete run. Which makes for a fantastic selling point of this book.

The book reprints Strange Tales #101-134 and Strange Tales Annual #2, comics I read when they came out in the early 1960s. But I guess I became so used to all comic book villains in the 80s and 90s being universe-destroying menaces that these tales are laughable now in that the bad guys that the Human Torch (and later with the Thing) came up against in these short stories were considered dangerous: Paste-Pot Pete, the Acrobat, the Asbestos Man, the Plantman, the Rabble Rouser, and Handsome Harry among them. On the plus side, reproduction of the pages is better than originally printed in the 1960s with solid color and black ink printing throughout on the art by Jack Kirby, Dick Ayers, and others.

The quality on this one was up to par on the old Epic collection, so no complaints there. It came with Strange, so the shipping was the issue.

What I did not like was Amazon's shipping. In the past, when buying Epic collections, or any book, it always came sealed tight. We just had our first snow storm this weekend, and have eight inches on the ground. The book was by my doorway, sealed in some sort of open folded cardboard.

These are not that cheap of books, so i was disappointed in this. Not sure if Amazon saved a nickel by not using tape? I won't be buying an more epic collections from Amazon directly, rather I will go to the third party sellers.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Burned through this Thing
Reviewed in Canada on September 21, 2018
I find it so much fun to have access to so many reprints of classic comics from my youth. For me it's nostalgia but these are just fun stories and despite being hokey and somewhat dated they still work. When I was a kid there were no comic shops where I lived and unless you bought things new, getting back issues was either a second hand store or what you could trade for. So for me I'm now able to discover these strange tales, and it's been awesome. As an aside the cover art shown, which while cool (and oddly THINGLESS) - is NOT what the actual book looks like. I suspect in time it'll be updated by Amazon, but really it's not that big an issue. I would have preferred a cover with the two principals but hey you can't have everything.

Some of my favourite early Marvel stories as they were often so daft and ridiculous but still really likeable. Often featured Sue and Ben etc from FF (as well as Reed occasionally), the stories are a perfect accompaniment to the FF volumes. The colour and art is first rate and super sharp. Why the book came out as a 'complete collection' is beyond me as it is basically an epic edition in all but name. This has joined my epic collection bookshelf and will be re-read over and over. Bring back Paste Pot Pete.
