The Flowers of Evil Vol. 4 Kindle & comiXology

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 447 ratings

In the fourth volume of Flowers of Evil, Takao makes his decision... He will try to win the affection of one his muses. This will be no simple task, as the teens in this manga drama are all now damaged and warped. Growing up without a mother has twisted their hearts. Helping people like that open up may be impossible, but Takao has thrown away his own humanity as well. Furthermore, Takao is now in search now a utopia. One that can only be shared with his best and only friend, that will sit, even if briefly, among the rice paddies and in the mountains of his rural hometown. And most importantly, it will be a place that pokes fun and underminds every little thin ideal that holds this town together. There is no way this new society will be accepted, but that is exactly what these two wanted in the first place.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“While Oshimi’s works are often disturbing and unsettling, they are rarely without positive endings and character redemption. This perhaps speaks to Oshimi’s motives in writing these bizarre, yet grounded horror stories. While our lives are fragile and not entirely our own, we have to make the best of them. In this way, Oshimi’s works are fable-like. By exploring the darker aspects of our world, he emphasizes the importance of perspective and the individual. The Flowers of Evil [is], in this sense, a classic coming-of-age tale.” — ComicsVerse

About the Author

Winner of the most important comics awards for newcomers, the Tetsuya Chiba Award in 2001, Oshimi has been penning quirky slice-of-life dramas now for over a decade for major manga publishers including Kodansha. After drawing nine series, Oshimi's star began to rise in 2008 with the release of his first hit, Drifting Net Cafe. This horror-themed homage to the legendary Kazu Umezzo work, Drifting Classroom, was adapted into a live-action series, and propelled Oshimi onto an international stage. He would soon reach new heights in 2009 with The Flowers of Evil. In 2010 and 2011, the property quietly landed on numerous must-read lists and helped revitalize the shonen genre.

This entire series was a mental blessing and release for me. It really dove deep into growing up, self-identification and discovery, validating yourself, and above all that a lot of people struggle with, moving on from scarred pasts. It follows a Male & Female protag Kasuga & Nakamura. These two get intertwined in perverted acts, criminal acts, suicidal acts, and a bunch of atypical middleschool aged drama that everyone experiences.

The first two complete volumes revolve around Kasugas middleschool life and how it spirals downward with nakamura. the second two volumes follows kasuga and Aya Tokiwa going through their generic highschool life, while kasuga is insearch for something more to fill him again, while on a search for Nakamura.

All in all, the manga did make me think, the art work was amazing. Would be lying if it didn't make me cry a lot about how life has turned out & how it's genuinely ok to move on with life.

Bought all 4 novels on a whim after reading a review online about the series. If your looking for a solid series look no further, its like a mix of Fight Club and Oyasami Punpun (although nowhere near as depressing as Punpun). A series well written and illustrated through and through, I'll definitely be buying more of Oshimi's works. I'm not the best at writing reviews (I rarely do), but I hope if your reading this while considering reading these novels, don't hesitate. It's worth every second, I heartedly reccomend this series!

I couldn't put down the first, second, or third volumes leading up to this. There is never a dull moment in this series. From Kasuga, to Nakamura, and Saeki, I can't decide which one is more unpredictable or messed up in the head. It's made me think about my own life and how society views people outside of the "norm." I'm definitely not normal and I know that, but I'm also normal in some ways - getting side tracked here. If you haven't already, pick up this series til the end. Beautiful artwork, with an amazing story. If you don't like stories that make you uncomfortable, it isn't the manga to read.

This is one of my favorite books ever. It contains a sick twisted evil side and a beautiful, peaceful side. I cant explain why but I love both sides (Evil and Good)
This is one of the books that shows the beauty in good and bad.

This manga series "Aku no Hana" by Shūzō Oshimi could start its own genre with just how unique it is. It stands out. If you like dark/disturbing/psychological series, I would recommend giving this a try. Vertical does an exceptional translation and includes integration of English sound effects into the scenery, it is seamless.

Was will man mehr?
