Not only that, she learns from her mom that she has supernatural powers and an important mission -- to restore her family's glory by defeating the local magical girl. The magical girl in question is Chiyoda Momo, a student at Yuko's school. With strength that is only mediocre at best, Yuko's task to vanquish Momo will prove more challenging than she realizes in this topsy-turvy magical girl comedy.

OMG, this is fantastic! Yuko and Momo are ADORABLE!!! Oh my, so cute. This story is just all warm and fuzzy feelings. This story reminds me of Gabriel Dropout, except it's nowhere near as offensive and overtly anti-Christian as GabOut is. This story is just pure cotton candy. Sugary-sweet and cloyingly addictive. I am really looking forward to the next volume of this series.

Standard cute and heartwarming story of two nice girls who are supposed to be deadly enemies growing closer and never quite getting around to their intended showdown. Five stars for the humor though. This manga had me literally guffawing and bursting out with laughter. It was a very fun read!

I absolutely love Machikado Mazoku (The Demon Girl Next Door) but I'm not a fan of the translation 7 Seas did. I ordered it the day it came out, and was very excited to own a physical edition of the manga, but there were a lot of key lines that don't come across as well in this version, versus how they were done both for fan translations of the manga and for subtitles of the anime adaptation. I didn't enjoy reading it this way, so opted not to go for the second volume, but I have heard a few things were changed for it that are improvements.
As a Manga? This is a 10/10. This particular edition? Not my favorite. My advice is buy to support the author, but read the fan translations instead to get a better reading experience.

Huge fan of the series from the anime, but the translation choices leave a lot to be desired.

I have not carefully read through my copy yet, but there are noticeable differences I have encountered skimming through my copy:

Changing Shamiko's catchphrase from "Don't Think This Means You Won" as it was translated in the anime and what everyone knows to "I will get you next time" is baffling and not as fitting as the character.

Changing Metako's dialogue from a serious "The Time Hath Come", to "To The Is Meow" completely changing the joke from.

Mistranslating a line about a about Shamiko wanting a doughnut shaped pillow for horns, to being a doughnut shaped pillow for her tail. This is called back to later where you can see her using it as a pillow (with the joke being she doesn't realize it is a cushion).

Many of these are minor, but the series relies heavily on callbacks to details from earlier so a correct translation is necessary. Even stranger these all differ significantly from the translations used in the anime in ways that are for the worse and leave a bad impression of the manga.

Despite being a huge fan of the series I can't recommend this volume with the current translation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ganbare Shamiko

3.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful read, just bad translation.

The story told in this book is amazing. I just find it sad how some translation choices, like the main character's catch phrase, have been "mis"translated. I put that in quotation marks because I don't know why seven seas chose to do it this way, but the official subtitles from the anime proof it's not truly what is being said. If you're here for the story, buy this book. If you don't like bad translations but know Japanese, import the original from Japan.
