The Creeps: Book 1: Night of the Frankenfrogs Kindle & comiXology

4.9 4.9 out of 5 stars 15 ratings

In Pumpkins County, weird things happen every day, but nobody ever makes a fuss. Nobody, that is, except the Creeps: Carol, a big-city girl new to Pumpkins County, who finds kindred spirits in Mitchell (monster expert), Jarvis (military brat with logistics know-how), and Rosario (girly girl on the outside, muscle underneath). The Creeps are on the case to figure out the spooky mysteries and still get to class on time. Last week it was a pudding monster. This week, it’s killer frogs--reanimated from the team's biology class dissection experiment. Who's behind the Frankenfrog attacks? The Creeps will track down the answers! In this new creepy graphic novel series, Chris Schweizer's art is full of the visual excitement that only the best graphic novel creators can pull off.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 3–6—As punishment for creating a giant mess in their school, Carol, Jarvis, Mitchell, and Rosario (known to their classmates as the Creeps) are being forced to perform the tasks normally completed by the janitor. When they discover that the frog specimens intended for dissection in their science class are missing, they know that they will be blamed, so they set out to discover who the real culprit might be. After a harrowing trek through the sewer and an encounter with a mad scientist, they are horrified to discover that the missing frog specimens have been reanimated as "frankenfrogs"—menacing monsters intent on attacking them with jolts of electricity. The Creeps use their unique skills and smarts to evade the frankenfrogs and discover who is creating these terrifying creatures—and why. This action-packed graphic novel features a diverse set of characters who are comfortable in their own skins and demonstrate that science can be dangerous and fun. VERDICT A wide range of readers will tear through this well-written and zanily drawn book, and they will be eager to see what wild adventures the four friends will have in the next volume.—Sarah Reid, Broome County Public Library, Binghamton, NY

Review

"An excellent complement to his prose, Schweizer's cleanly paneled art is bright and busy, ever ready with a gag that helps blend the ghastly with the goofy, making his gang's antics reminiscent of Scooby Doo...Silly fun with a smattering of science."―Kirkus Reviews

"Schweizer has created a story with just enough icky, spooky action for middle-grade readers who want horror stories but don’t want them too scary...The mixed-gender, multicultural team guarantees that this series opener will appeal to a broad range of readers."―

A great first installment in what I hope will be a long running series. A pitch perfect, all ages adventure story that is never predictable, boring or condescending. I eagerly look forward to the next story!

I had a blast reading this comic. It's perfect for kids and their parents. It's full of humor and horror on many levels. The world and characters are developed. I can't wait to see this series grow.

Really fun read with expressive, animated artwork. Just scary enough to be interesting but not nightmare inducing. Great action without any inappropriate violence. Great job all around!

Lived up to the "Creepy" part. Gender/size reversal on the "clothes freak" was great. Loved the sewer travels <G>

The Creeps: Carol (Hacker extraordinaire), Mitchell (Monster expert), Jarvis (Gadget wizard) and Rosario( Super-ripped fashionista) are apart of a crime-solving squad at their Pumpkins County Middle School. These students and classmates like to solve spooky mysteries. The Creeps use their unique talents and humor throughout this funny action-packed graphic novel to find out who's responsible for the missing frog specimens that are intended to be dissected in their science class project.
One of my favorite parts is the investigation of Perry Milburn who was the only sixth grader to ever win first place at the state science fair. The Creeps felt he could be a suspect in the disappearance of the school's frogs. Perry went missing after losing his title two years later and is believed to be maintaining a secret laboratory in the sewers using old discarded school equipment for mysterious experiments.
I really enjoyed the reading. This fictional book was entertaining from beginning to end. The story and characters are well developed. The author does a great job of building suspense, and keeping the reader guessing. I'm giving a rating of five stars and feel parents and kids of all ages will feel the same.

I'm an adult and I really enjoyed this book. The characters were interesting and clever, the pacing was great and the art was quirky and fun. I plan to buy this for my niece who is in 5th grade.

'The Creeps: Book 1: Night of the Frankenfrogs' by Chris Schweizer feels like not the first book in a series even though it is one. Regardless, it's a fun romp full of weird creatures and gross situations.

The Creeps are a bunch of misfit kids with varying talents. At the beginning of the book, they've obviously been in trouble for something, so the school is making them fill in for the school custodian. One of their jobs is to bring in the frogs that the Biology lab will be dissecting. When the frogs go missing, The Creeps decide to go looking for the absent amphibians. They find themselves crawling around in the sewers along with super rats, strange creatures, and the Frankenfrogs in the title. There are a lot of suspects, so who is in charge of the newly reconfigured frogs?

My inner 5th grader liked the characters and the kind of gross fun they get into in this graphic novel. I was confused because it seems like there is an earlier adventure that happens before this book. The art is ok, but a little loose on style. It's easy enough to follow what's going on, but some panels seem a bit overly busy. I'd like to read more adventures of this clever band of misfits.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from ABRAMS, Amulet Books, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.
