The Children Nowadays is one of those manga that's obscure in the eyes of many, and will most likely never get a whole lot of attention. That's because of two things: it's uninspiring and has an average set-up. The art style is okay, though I'm glad Kubo chose something simplistic instead of that samey art style that you see in manga nowadays (no pun intended). The characters are okay and the stories are okay. Kirita is a rather flat protagonist and not very memorable. His lack of facial expressions is brought up in one of the stories in this volume, but it's just not interesting. Seriously, Maruko of Chibi Maruko-chan is a much more likable and memorable protagonist than Kirita!
I don't know why Viz Media chose to license this, but there's honestly much, much better slice of life manga out there. Danchi Tomoo, Ojarumaru (the Shueisha version), and Nono-chan are examples of slice of manga that are also obscure here in North America, but are actually really interesting and deserve to get licensed. The Children Nowadays is not a bad slice of life manga, but there's just not a whole lot of elements in it to really reel you into the stories and the characters.
