Review

"This series, like The Watchmen before it, turns the concept of superheroics on its head in loving, cynical fashion and tells a mean, fast story along the way."—Publishers Weekly

About the Author

Mark Millar has written some of the most successful English-language comics in recent years. His recent projects are Marvel's CIVIL WAR, ULTIMATES 2, ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR and WOLVERINE. CIVIL WAR was featured on everything from CNN to MTV for the public unmasking of Spider-Man. His comic WANTED was a hit movie in 2008 starring Angelina Jolie; his series KICK-ASS is currently in production as a movie starring Nicolas Cage.  He collaborated with writer Grant Morrison on several FLASH titles, and also wrote memorable runs of THE AUTHORITY.

This is NOT a comic for children. Only for adults. I'd give it a pretty hard R rating. It includes graphic gore, sexual assault, outrageously vile characterizations, graphic sadism, and ... you get the idea. You really shouldn't leave this one out where curious little kids might sneak a look. The writing is continually surprising, especially so regarding the plot (surprise after surprise after surprise). It's politically incorrect in all sorts of ways, such as accepting gay characters as full human beings and heroes. Some of the characterizations are surprising full, even rich. Some, however, take obnoxious stereotypes and stretch them until they veer into camp (the southern redneck super-monster immediately comes to mind). I'm a big fan of Frank Quitely's and Art Adam's art. This is a 5-star comic, though only for those who can accept the way Millar is twisting the genre and perhaps his political take on government power, hatred, fascism, gay people, and so on. Definitely check the sample before purchasing.

Great shop! It is second hand but the conditions are great!
Excellent collection item for comics fan!

Frank Quitely's art is magnificent, truly unique artist. But the writing, while great on it's own, pales slightly in comparison to Warren Ellis's work. It's still a great compendium, and a must buy for anyone who has Authority Vol. 1

(Minor Spoilers)

This is -not- your typical Superhero book. The Authority is not the JLA, they are not trying to defend and support the status quo, no, they want to build a better world, and sometimes that means executing a dictator here, or telling governments when they're allowed to invade others.

This is a great comic, it's extremely violent and has some content (Implied sexual violence) that may turn others off. I would recommend it to anyone who's not interested in reading another JLA book, but wants something exciting and new.

Vol. 1 is a tough act to follow, and with different artists doing the characters it was not as good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Who watches The Authority?
Reviewed in France on August 14, 2014

- 'All Tomorrow Parties' (scénario Doselle Young, dessins John McCrea),
- 'Brave New World' (4 chapitres, dont ici le chapitre 1er), scénario Millar, dessins Quitely,
- 'Transfer of Power' (4 chapitres), scénario Tom Peyer, dessins Dustin Nguyen,
- 'Brave New World' (les 3 derniers chapitres), scénario Millar, dessins Arthur Adams.

Under New Management ', la totalité de ' Earth Inferno and Other Stories ', le #21 inclus dans ' The Monarchy: Bullets over Babylon ' et la totalité de 'Transfer of Power'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Continuing the wild ride
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 8, 2014
This decent size volume (larger than volume 1) continues series with a new writer and artist. Volume 1 ended with the death of Jenny Sparks at the end of the millenium with the teams leadership being handed over to Jack Hawksmoore, the King of Cities. What unfolds in this volume is the 'what happened next' The answer is ' a heck of a lot'

The pacing in this series is pretty breakneck with the Authority going from secret protectors of Earth as per vol 1 to very publicly intervening in world affairs once Hawksmoore takes over. The stories are executed with a lot of political awareness and subtext whilst not holding back on more adult themes, the doctors substance abuse for example.

The core team starts off pretty much as it was a the end of volume 1, to avoid further spoilers there's a seeminglyu big change up in the 'Transfer of Power' story line here but thats best enjoyed as you read.

The artwork isn't as crisp as Hitches work on volume 1 with the characters like Hawksmoore drawn as hulkish man beasts, it's a stylistic choice more than a flaw but I prefer the cleaner lines of the 1st issues. The writing standard is maintained between Ellis and Miller, with Miller here maybe injecting a few more shocks value items, more profanity and in your face stuff but it doesn't make this volume any less enjoyable.

The scope of this book is huge, the journey the team take from start to finish here covers an incredible amount of events in 416 pages and the perils faced are at minimum on the planetary scale. This is a damn good adult comic series. You can pick up from volume 2 but I would recommend reading the 1st volume beforehand to set the scene. Only thing I would have liked more of here is more Midnighter, he's a great dark reflection of batman.

Story 5 stars

I liked it. Ok, not all of it. SPOILER Right up to the bit with the replacement Authority it was fine. Not as good as the first one, but not terrible. From that moment onwards it was a massive disappointment. Can't recommend it.
