Another collection of Batman stories during the early eighties by Gerry Conway. His language is quite literary and I love the way he introduces his stories. By this period, the traditional introduction “orphaned as a child...” is abandoned, replacing it with dramatic language which built the atmosphere and mood of the story, announcing something ominous about to happen. Conway also continues Len Wein’s soap opera style narrative: combining the private life of Bruce Wayne with the busy crime-fighting life of the Batman, bringing romance with the Catwoman back, the return of Boss Rupert Thorne (from Steve Englehart’s period), and mayoral candidates opposing him and Commisioner Gordon. In addition to this, this collection includes solo stories with Robin as he goes through an existential crisis. During Conway’s tenure, BM stories do mix reality with the supernatural: a snow monster (son of a Yeti monster and a woman), a werewolf (from a Len Wein story), and a man turned into a mole!

Two things I like about these author-centered volumes. First, I get continuity in these stories; secondly, I get to see different illustrators. Throughout this volume, readers experience the artwork mostly from Don Newton, Irv Novick, and Gene Colan, among others. There are also writing contributions by Roy Thomas. Something that is new, never seen before is that Batman and Detective Comics issues are getting connected starting with BM 345 and Detective Comics 512.

As usual, quite satisfied with the collection.

Continuing the great Gerry Conway run in Batman and Detective from the early 1980’s, this volume offers a great continuing story with compelling art by Gene Colan and Don Newton. This Batman is a more mature, more compelling version of the character than is presented today. This is a well constructed volume with quality printing. A good value. I hope a volume three is in the works!

I grew up this stories and they still hold for me, 35+ years later.
Besides Conway interesting stories there is the dynamic art by Don Newton.
Gene Colan jumps in with his moody artwork starting with BATMAN #340.
Plus old pro Irv Novick does his usual nice-clean art.

Old enemies return: Two-Face, Cat-Man, Poison Ivy, The Original Mad Hatter, Dr. Death, and Dala.
New foes created by Conway include: Mirage, Manikan, Sportsman, and The Snowman.

At this point in Bat-History DECTECIVE COMICS and BATMAN merge into one long story line as Conway
continues to build on stories from Steve Englehart and Len Wein.
Vicki Vale returns after being away for years.
Dr. 13, The Ghost Breaker, makes a few guest appearances helping/hindering Batman with the Haunting of Wayne Manor.

The story from WORLD'S FINEST COMICS #270 finds Batman and Superman taking on Metello.

HIGHLY RECOMMANDED!

I grew up in the Bronze Age of comics. I was fortunate enough to read the great Steve Englehart run in Detective when it was new.
When Gerry Conway took over the writing on both Batman and Detective, it was clear early on he was just in it for the money, cranking out lazy, bloated, uninspired stories. Worst off, many of them dragged out elements of the Englehart run and dragged them into the ground. It was disheartening to be collecting batman on autopilot, with the only bright spots being an occasional issue drawn by Garcia Lopez. I almost gave up on collecting comics, but thankfully, Doug Moench arrived as regular writer and saved Batman. The glowing reviews of these Conway reprint books remind me of the glowing comments of the letters columns back in the day. I read them and went "Is this a real person writing in?"
