About the author
Geoff Johns is an award-winning and New York Times bestselling writer, film and television producer, showrunner, and entrepreneur known for re-imagining superheroes and other iconic mythologies, past and present. Johns is best known for his work on properties such as Green Lantern, Aquaman, The Flash, Superman, Batman, Justice Society of America, and most recently, the creator-owned hit series Geiger, currently being adapted for television at Paramount.
Since the beginning of his creative career, Johns' hallmark has been writing heroic and inclusive characters, including teenage hero Courtney Whitmore aka Stargirl, inspired by his real-life late sister; the Shazam Family, which he re-imagined into a diverse modern family of today; and the first Arab-American Green Lantern, Simon Baz, as well as the explosive multi-colored Lantern mythology that defined his decade-long bestselling Green Lantern run, among many, many others.
Johns’ most recognized work in television is the critically acclaimed Stargirl series which he created and ran. Some of his film credits include Wonder Woman (executive producer), Wonder Woman 1984 (also co-writer), Aquaman (also story) and Shazam! (executive producer), based on his graphic novel with longtime collaborator and modern legendary artist Gary Frank.
In 2023, Johns co-founded Ghost Machine, the first-of-its-kind creator-owned company. This groundbreaking collective includes some of the industry’s most legendary writers and artists, disrupting the old industry model by giving ownership to its creators, and paving the way for them to retain creative control and financial participation.
Born in Detroit to a Lebanese father, Johns was honored with his own permanent section at the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn, Michigan.

Johns and Donner tell two really good Superman tales. They are both pretty short making for a quick read. Last Son is a cool action tale that has a lot of heartfelt moments. Johns really gets these characters. Having Donner only helps as he is responsible for the Christopher Reeve Superman movies. He knows Superman inside out as well. I think I liked Escape From Bizarro World a little better of the two. Bizarro hardly gets any love and they sure gave it to him here. This is one of the funniest stories in comics I've ever read and it still has those heartfelt moments. If you are a Superman fan you'll love these two.
The art is sensational. Adam Kubert jumps over from Marvel to do Last Son and The Goon artist Eric Powell does Escape From Bizarro World. Both have distinctive styles that really provide the emotional depth these stories require. There are also a great lineup of artists that do the other mini stories as well.
My only complaints here are that there is a table of contents but no page numbering. Defeating the purpose of having one. DC has been kinda hit or miss with that lately. The other thing is that DC should just have made a Superman By Geoff Johns Omnibus with his entire Action Comics run (except for the New Krypton issues those should be in a Superman: New Krypton Omnibus). Instead we get this partial collection with a couple of stories he wrote with Donner. Fans would have probably gone nuts for an omnibus with the entire run. I'm glad we got something but hopefully there's a Superman by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank deluxe edition with the Legion Of Superheroes and Brainiac stories.
All in all a great collection of stories worthy of the deluxe format. Hopefully there is more coming of this run.

The main Last Son storyline is good and involves a tussle with Supes old phantom zone enemies. Richard Donner should be familiar to many readers as the director of the original Superman films featuring Christopher Reeve whilst Geoff Johns will be known to comic fans as a result of his much praised runs on various series and both these chaps have a good handle on what Superman is all about. What I don't understand is why Superman seems to have been ignored when DC were deciding which Geoff Johns series needed the Omnibus treatment as his run is pretty good. I appreciated some nice art from Adam Kubert and a script that is an easy read and doesn't overpower the artwork. I should also mention a very nice introduction by Marc McClure who played Jimmy Olsen in the original Superman movie. I was less keen on the Bizarro storyline mainly because I find the Bizzarros fairly unappealing as Superman villains - actually I'm not too sure why these issues were included in this collection as the publishers could easily have substituted archive material or some other Geoff Johns Superman material. Annual #10 is like an anthology of tales and inevitably some hits and some misses. Overall, a good purchase, especially if you don't have the originals but I still hope for a Geoff Johns Superman Omnibus which would include Richard Donner's contributions.
