Superman: The Golden Age Vol. 4 (Action Comics (1938-2011)) Kindle & comiXology

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 65 ratings

In the early 1940s Superman was a much-needed hero for a nation on the brink of war. The Man of Steel was in his Golden Age, and with each new story, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster were continuing to expand and enrich the world of their still-relatively-new creation. In these early adventures, Superman must protect the citizens of Metropolis from a variety of threats ranging from insurance scams and gangsters to spies and saboteurs. Plus, Lex Luthor returns to cement his place as Superman’s archnemesis, with more schemes and gadgets than any other villain facing the Man of Steel!

Superman: The Golden Age Volume Four collects adventures from World’s Finest Comics #3-5, Superman #12-15 and Action Comics #41-47.

About the Author

Born in 1914 in Cleveland, OH, Jerome Siegel was, as a teenager, a fan of the emerging literary genre that came to be known as science fiction. Together with schoolmate Joe Shuster, Siegel published several science fiction fan magazines, and in 1933 they came up with their own science fiction hero--Superman. Siegel scripted and Shuster drew several weeks' worth of newspaper strips featuring their new creation, but garnered no interest from publishers or newspaper syndicates. It wasn't until the two established themselves as reliable adventure-strip creators at DC Comics that the editors at DC offered to take a chance on the Superman material--provided it was re-pasted into comic book format for DC's new magazine, ACTION COMICS. Siegel wrote the adventures of Superman (as well as other DC heroes, most notably the Spectre, his co-creation with Bernard Baily) through 1948 and then again from 1959-1966, in the interim scripting several newspaper strips including Funnyman and Ken Winston. Jerry Siegel died in January 1996.

Happy to find this edition. My boys loved it.

I like being able to zoom in on the art work or zoom out when I am looking thru the stories. This is something that is done better on a digital screen than with a magnifying glass and a print copy. I think the print copy would also be GREAT 👍 but I chose this version and I am glad I did. Cheers mate!

Old stories of the greatest hero of all time, Superman are good! Superman is a good reason to go back to buy comics again.

It was fun to read. It covers stories from the late 1941 to early 1942. However, comics were often distributed 3 to 4 months ahead of the month on the cover, thus there is no indication that the U.S. is at war yet. However, Superman fights fifth columnists in several of these stories. In addition to this, SM protects consumers against crashing trains and planes, faces some new villains - the Archer, the Lightning Master, and the Evolution King -, fights against a Hitler-like dictator, and confronts the mad scientist Luthor on four occasions. On a couple of occasions, Siegel makes a detour into the fantastic with The City beneath the Earth and The Undersea City where strange civilizations jeopardize humanity. Jimmy Olsen makes his first appearances in SM 13 and 14 (The Archer and The Corp Who Was Ruined). The plots, dialogues, and artwork are characteristic of this period. The only difference is that now DC has a greater variety of illustrators although it is hard to distinguish artists’ work the way readers do nowadays. The usual comic situations between Lois and Clark are included here.

The color printing was very good. Was amazed that Superman actually jumped from place to place instead of flying in these early stories.
