About the Author

Grant Morrison has been working with DC Comics for more than twenty years, beginning with his legendary runs on the revolutionary titles ANIMAL MAN and DOOM PATROL. Since then he has written numerous best-sellers — including JLA, BATMAN and New X-Men — as well as the critically acclaimed creator-owned series THE INVISIBLES, SEAGUY, THE FILTH, WE3 and JOE THE BARBARIAN. Morrison has also expanded the borders of the DC Universe in the award-winning pages of SEVEN SOLDIERS, ALL-STAR SUPERMAN, FINAL CRISIS and BATMAN, INC., and he is currently reinventing the Man of Steel in the all-new ACTION COMICS.
In his secret identity, Morrison is a “counterculture” spokesperson, a musician, an award-winning playwright and a chaos magician. He is also the author of the
New York Times best-seller Supergods, a groundbreaking psycho-historic mapping of the superhero as a cultural organism. He divides his time between his homes in Los Angeles and Scotland.

Wow this was painful to read. There is so much going on, the picture on the cover tells you just what the book is like chaos. So glad Grant Morrison's run with Superman is over. If I could I would give 5 stars to the short 8 page story at the end by Sholly Fisch "A boy and his dog" It is Excellent! Brought a tear to my eye. LOL

It's sort of funny that Grant Morrison has found so much success in writing comics. Comics are a medium where readers constantly miss issues, start stories in the middle, or read stories out of order and with month-or-longer gaps between reading. Much of Morrison's work requires the reader read everything start to finish to fully enjoy (and sometimes simply understand) the forces at play in the text. Morrison's (relatively) short and contained pieces like Happy and All-Star Superman are really easy to digest because the mind need only hold onto twelve or less issues worth of material, one or two universes in the multiverse, one or two incantations of the character, minimalist magic.
Morrison's run on Action Comics (vol. 1-3) resembled his Seven Soldiers of Victory more so than his Batman and Son stuff. The narratives all over the place (and time and space and race)- President Superman, people in Superman's brain, Clark Kent in a hoodie (just try it, Zimmerman), Brainiac, ghosts, LOSH. Individually the issues and the trades are enjoyable, but it's really a story you need to read all together. To truly value the role that Krypto plays, you need to listen to the homeless people.
I recommend this book to fans of Superman and wild physics.

For any individual who enjoys watching the old Rod Serling "Twilight Zone" series and also enjoys reading installments of "Superman" than this is the comic for you.
This piece goes into great detail of explaining many of the plot twists that have defined "THE NEW 52 Action Comics" Series from all other Superman incarnations. As this Graphic Novel touches base on how a young Clark Kent was denied the love of his parents at such a young age and how exactly that purple derby wearing inter-dimensional trouble-maker, Mister Mxyzptlk (Mix-yes-spit-lick) is involved in all of this.
More importantly this gives a shining example of what makes Superman such a reflection on the heroes of ancient literature... the need to rise above and become something better through great struggles of trial and tribulation.

Very entertaining, and most likely will be confusing on a first read...
This is one of those Grant Morrison stories where reading it twice will make you like it, and one that gets better and better after pondering it over time. Definitely recommend reading Volume 1 and Volume 2 before this, because the many references and 'reveals' are only meaningful if you have been following the story and characters (and background hints). If you read the first two volumes earlier, then RE-READ them before taking on this final volume of Morrison's run on Action Comics because it will be much easier to understand and enjoy that way.

Story is actually very simple, but the narrative is told in a very broken and chunky way. The connections you make on a second reading is where the emotion and depth comes from. A first reading is mostly entertaining and bound to be confusing, which I believe is done purposely to create a feeling of a jigsaw puzzle. This is also a meta-level analogy to allow the reader to experience what Superman is experiencing in also trying to figure out a mysterious foe and his hints through temporal manipulations.

I would give it 5 stars for the story potential, but due to some sometimes over esoteric references or need to flip back, that made the volume a bit cumbersome. For some, that is a big pro, and for others a con, and for me it was entertaining yet also a tad annoying. Overall worth reading but requires patience. If you liked Final Crisis, the style and ambiguity and fast resolutions are very reminiscent.

I don't know why I expect something other than excellence with an author like Grant Morrison. I have lots of friends that only having read the first issues of this book, said that it was't very interesting and also that it was bad.
And I always repeat the same: with Morrison, you have to wait till the end.
When he starts a story, whatever it is, he has it all planned on his head. And it won't pay out till the very last issue.
This is not a book for everybody. It demands a certain level of concentration that, I think, only maybe Alan Moore can acomplish too.
To wrap it up: buy the three volumes, read them carefully, and think if it's not a great story.
If you do think that it's bad, then keep buying your Geoff Jones books...

5.0 out of 5 stars Emocionante!

Vale a pena ler! Esse volume é um tapa na cara dos críticos ao Superman do New 52. 5/5

A fantastic conclusion to Grant Morrison's run on Action Comics culminates with a battle for Clark's soul, as he is attacked at different points in his life by Vyndktvx from the 5th Dimension.

At times the story can be hard to follow but if you read it more than once you really will see the beauty of it, with the love story of Mxyzptlk and Nyxlygsptlnz taking centre stage as we learn what Mxyzptlk's greatest trick is, which has something to do with his fondness for Superman. Because of the Imp's machinations, the future is at threat and the Legion of Super-Heroes travels to the past to help Superman before the worst happens.
