Action Comics, Vol. 3: At the End of Days (The New 52) (Superman - Action Comics Volumes (The New 52)) Kindle & comiXology
Five years ago, Clark Kent moved to Metropolis. Alone but hopeful, he donned a simple t-shirt laden with a giant S, beginning the career of one of the greatest heroes this--or any other--world has seen. Superman has grown with the city around him, and though he is feared by the public, there's no doubt they need him to protect them from this universe's gravest threats. But when the multiverse sends it's deadliest villains against the Man of Steel, can even he turn them back?

Morrison's run on Action Comics (vol. 1-3) resembled his Seven Soldiers of Victory more so than his Batman and Son stuff. The narratives all over the place (and time and space and race)- President Superman, people in Superman's brain, Clark Kent in a hoodie (just try it, Zimmerman), Brainiac, ghosts, LOSH. Individually the issues and the trades are enjoyable, but it's really a story you need to read all together. To truly value the role that Krypto plays, you need to listen to the homeless people.
I recommend this book to fans of Superman and wild physics.
This piece goes into great detail of explaining many of the plot twists that have defined "THE NEW 52 Action Comics" Series from all other Superman incarnations. As this Graphic Novel touches base on how a young Clark Kent was denied the love of his parents at such a young age and how exactly that purple derby wearing inter-dimensional trouble-maker, Mister Mxyzptlk (Mix-yes-spit-lick) is involved in all of this.
More importantly this gives a shining example of what makes Superman such a reflection on the heroes of ancient literature... the need to rise above and become something better through great struggles of trial and tribulation.
This is one of those Grant Morrison stories where reading it twice will make you like it, and one that gets better and better after pondering it over time. Definitely recommend reading Volume 1 and Volume 2 before this, because the many references and 'reveals' are only meaningful if you have been following the story and characters (and background hints). If you read the first two volumes earlier, then RE-READ them before taking on this final volume of Morrison's run on Action Comics because it will be much easier to understand and enjoy that way.
Story is actually very simple, but the narrative is told in a very broken and chunky way. The connections you make on a second reading is where the emotion and depth comes from. A first reading is mostly entertaining and bound to be confusing, which I believe is done purposely to create a feeling of a jigsaw puzzle. This is also a meta-level analogy to allow the reader to experience what Superman is experiencing in also trying to figure out a mysterious foe and his hints through temporal manipulations.
I would give it 5 stars for the story potential, but due to some sometimes over esoteric references or need to flip back, that made the volume a bit cumbersome. For some, that is a big pro, and for others a con, and for me it was entertaining yet also a tad annoying. Overall worth reading but requires patience. If you liked Final Crisis, the style and ambiguity and fast resolutions are very reminiscent.
And I always repeat the same: with Morrison, you have to wait till the end.
When he starts a story, whatever it is, he has it all planned on his head. And it won't pay out till the very last issue.
This is not a book for everybody. It demands a certain level of concentration that, I think, only maybe Alan Moore can acomplish too.
To wrap it up: buy the three volumes, read them carefully, and think if it's not a great story.
If you do think that it's bad, then keep buying your Geoff Jones books...

At times the story can be hard to follow but if you read it more than once you really will see the beauty of it, with the love story of Mxyzptlk and Nyxlygsptlnz taking centre stage as we learn what Mxyzptlk's greatest trick is, which has something to do with his fondness for Superman. Because of the Imp's machinations, the future is at threat and the Legion of Super-Heroes travels to the past to help Superman before the worst happens.
