Star Wars: Doctor Aphra Vol. 5: Worst Among Equals (Star Wars: Doctor Aphra (2016-2019)) Kindle & comiXology

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 515 ratings

Collects Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #26-31, Star Wars: Doctor Aphra Annual #2.

Doctor Aphra — worst among equals! On the run from the law in a massive alien metropolis, Aphra has ten hours to cross the hostile megacity before the bomb implanted in her throat explodes. And don’t forget the pack of bounty hunters and crazed cops that are on her tail. No big deal, right? But there’s one more wrinkle: Aphra can’t stray more than a few paces from her companion without activating the bomb’s proximity alert and blowing both of them up. And that companion is Triple-Zero — a sadistic, murderous droid who’s more interested in Aphra’s death than in playing nice! With undead hunters, monster trappers and the foulest divisions of the Imperial war machine between Aphra and salvation, is this the end for the galaxy’s foremost amoral archaeologist?

Beautiful
I found this storyline to be written very beautifully. What on the surface sounded like it would be done as a dark comedy (which I would still love just not as much as this) surprised me and turned out to be a small, intimate character study of Chelli Aphra and 0-0-0 dissecting who they are, their morality, and how they view each other. They’ve both done many reprehensible things, one clearly worse than the other in my mind, but still they won’t kill each other even once it becomes a valid option for each of them and 0-0-0 even calls Aphra a friend by the end of it. I view Aphra taking a child under her wing as her deciding that while yes, she has done questionable things in the past she wants to do right by someone. In short this story is a beautiful look at these two amazing characters and what makes them who they are issue 30 has an incredible moment with 0-0-0 that I won’t spoil here.As for the art I would say it’s not the greatest but still decent and the story more than makes up for it. While on this subject I must also mention the cover art on these issues is amazing and Ashley Witter deserves a lot of credit for her work on this series.P.S. If you’re wondering why I don’t have a verified purchase I have read this story in single issues as pictured. I wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone who loves these characters and wants a more serious story while still having silly bits.

This is my favorite ongoing Star Wars comic series. This volume starts out with the Annual #2 story. It's a fun, little story about some animal wranglers hired by Aphra. The non-lethal Trandoshan is one of my new favorite characters. I'd love to see more stories about Winloss and Nokk.

Doctor Aphra and Triple Zero have to stick together because bombs inside of them will go off if they're too far apart. Cornelius Evazan and Ponda Baba are also featured in this volume. I like seeing background characters getting more fledged out stories.

You get to see the PR side of the Empire in this volume! The Imperial Propaganda Flagship!

This series has so many great original characters that come back into play when it makes sense. They utilize them so well.

This volume could be a satisfying conclusion, but I know there's at least a little more to come. I give this volume a 5/5. This series has excellent original characters in original stories. With growth. And still staying connected to the overall Star Wars story.

Just finished a few off these books, thoroughly entertaining. And there has never been a character quite like Dr. Aphra, an archeologist, adventurer, criminal, known far and wide (and hated) for her betrayals, who travels with two murder Droids, a dark C3PO who dreams of torture, and a twisted R2 who has the arsenal of an army.

And they're the good guys.

Just so much fun to read, and quite a few are on Prime reading, got me started, now I am buying them. On sale of course, as befits a proper New Englander......

We've come back to the previous illustrator, which is a good thing, as tome 4 was clearly less good on that aspect, because of the way Aphra was drawn. That being said, the way Lasio draws her works, but she looks 16, while originally, when Aphra was first introduced to us, in the Darth Vador series, she looked more like 25-30. I'd prefer her to look the way she looked at first. Which is why I put away a star. But besides that, the drawing is pretty good.

The story is great! Like, really good. The relationship between her and the psychopath robot is very well done. So, a good new addition to the series.

Let's see what volume 6 will be. There will be a new illustrator, though, so I'm worried... We'll see.

So interesting narratives and the story is something unique to Star Wars. Reminds me of “Mission Impossible” vibes and the suspense is so real. Also very touching in the character interactions with the protagonist and supporting roles. Gripping for sure.

She's the cutest little sociopath that you've ever met. She'll drop her best friend like a rock if it comes to a "me" or
"Them" situation. She doesn't have a loyalty bone in her body.

And yet, she's addictive. Her book is hard to put down.

The character is so fresh--a new take on the Star Wars universe.

She's a bad-guy, yeah. Always getting into trouble.

But...you just can't help but root for her.

Marvel! Keep 'em coming!

Betrayal and friendship are at the core of this mutually assured destruction road trip type story. As always, the art is beautiful and the expansion of the Star Wars universe is incredible, but there's oddly a lot of heart to the mad dash to disarm neck bombs.

The plot was really entertaining, and I really enjoyed the robots. I need nine more words to post this, so here are at least nine more words.

the art varied, sometimes excellent and sometimes not so much. the story was entertaining, but don't expect to take much away after reading it. it's really for kids. some of the messages about casual killing are not for young kids tho...
Amen...

Super!

5.0 out of 5 stars A leap forward from vol.4

One of the best volumes yet with a fantastic, almost third wall breaking, addressing of the weaknesses of vol.4. The story itself is great and continues to explore questions of morality, selflessness, and self preservation. The art and writing are also on top form here.

My only complaint is that the story seems to winding up towards an ending to the Doctor Aphra series. Which if true is very sad :(
