Silver Surfer Masterworks Vol. 2 (Silver Surfer (1968-1970)) Kindle & comiXology

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 86 ratings

Collects Silver Surfer (1968) #7-18.

The world's favorite space-faring super hero in his continuing saga of anguish and adventure! He sacrificed himself to save his home world of Zenn-La from the planet-devouring menace, Galactus, saving those he loved in exchange for a life of servitude as the Silver Surfer. Now, after disobeying his master, Norrin Radd is stranded on the planet Earth-forever removed from his love, Shalla-Bal, and from the beckoning spaceways! A high point of epic adventure and lyrical drama, The Silver Surfer took the comic-book super hero to all-new heights. Using their ravaged protagonist as a lens through which they could comment on the social injustices of the era, Stan Lee and John Buscema turned the Surfer into the ultimate outsider archetype, reflecting the reader's world in his metallic skin. In these pages the Surfer will face ghosts from beyond the grave seeking redemption, the horrors of war, the devious Mephisto, and mighty Marvel heroes from Spider-Man to the Human Torch and the Inhumans.

Stan Lee is a man who needs no introduction. Nevertheless: Having begun his career with wartime Timely Comics and staying the course throughout the Atlas era, Stan the Man made comic-book history with Fantastic Four #1, harbinger of a bold new perspective in story writing that endures to this day. With some of the industry’s greatest artists, he introduced hero after hero in Incredible Hulk, Amazing Spider-Man, X-Men and more — forming a shared universe for rival publishers to measure themselves against. After an almost literal lifetime of writing and editing, Lee entered new entertainment fields and earned Marvel one opportunity after another. He remains one of Marvel’s best-known public representatives.

-----------------

If only there was more Silver Surfer comic kindle trades available. Silver Surfer is one of the most powerful Marvel superheroes. These stories where he doesn't have a girlfriend that he is carrying around with him are good.

I am the power and the plan, Mephosto, lord of the lower depths said on page 217 from, "The Flame and the Fury," by Stan Lee and John Busema. The Silver Surfer has quite the conundrum indeed. Saving Earth's life force and seeking eternal love and bliss with his beloved Shalla-Bal. Chrome Dome is forced to fight in battles never choosed. "Gather Ye Witches" seized my senses with its catchy writing prowess by Stan Lee; The hidden loom of destiny weaves the fabric of our tale.(pg, 138) There a far too many fascinating phrases to laden this review with, but wow; If man is sane, then the universe itself is steeped in madness. We have tasted the forbidden, dared to summon forth the shades of the beyond. From the deepest thralls of fear, let the wrath appear. (Pg, 134) The storylines in "Master Works" ignite the imagination, and provide a pleasant escape from reality while tinging on our tangible and cerebral dreams and desires. Almost 300 pages, and it wasn't nearly enough. The saga of the Siler Surfer is captured extremely well in "Master Works." and toward the end of the book, John Buscema's art work is deliciously detailed in black and white, especially his penciling on Mephesto. And so the doomsday man plunges down to the core of Earth, nothing can save the humans, but the cosmic power of the Silver Surfer. (pg, 174) "Master Works" illustrated the vital importance of Chrome Dome. I'll definately be reading more surf man sagas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Big John Buscema is da man!

Awesome great quality Marvel comicbook stories. I understand why The Silver Surfer is a favorite of Stan Lee, Buscema is, imo, together with Gulacy (Shang Chi), Gene Colan (especially The Tomb Of Dracula) and probably Romita (Spiderman), the best artists from the Silver age of Marvel comics. It doesn't get better than this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great collection of comics, FANTASTIC final issue!
Reviewed in Canada on January 26, 2016
This second collected volume of Stan Lee and John Buscema's Silver Surfer series contains a wonderful surprise -- a final issue by Jack The King Kirby! Despite being resoundly upset at being cut out of the Silver Surfer's solo entries by Lee in an attempt to wrest control of the character he created, Kirby gives it his all in this final issue, produced just as he was leaving Marvel. The Surfer's rage at unfair humanity seems to exemplify Kirby's own feelings towards Marvel at this time.

The other issues, with art by Buscema, are also pretty good, continuing the series' self-indulgent tone as dictated by Stan Lee's pontificating.
