Simon "Si" Spurrier writes novels and comics.

His work in the latter field stretches from award winning creator-owned books such as 'The Spire', 'Coda' and 'Angelic' to projects in the U.S. mainstream like 'Hellblazer', 'The Dreaming' and 'X-Men'. He and his works have been nominated for Eisner Awards multiple times.

His prose works range from the beatnik neurosis-noir of 'Contract' ("A tour de force" - The Times) to the occult whodunnit 'A Serpent Uncoiled' ("Gargantuan literary flourishes" - The Truth About Books). His experimental e-novella 'Unusual Concentrations' was shortlisted for the Shirley Jackson Awards.

He lives in Margate, UK.

Top reviews from the United States

I feel compelled to write a review for this, seeing is how it's probably my favourite Silver Surfer story ever. Requiem, which is another amazing book, but seems to get all the attention while In Thy Name is forgotten, perhaps because it came out in the shadow of Requiem.

Regardless, In Thy Name is a touching look into Surfer's outsider nature and how he views life. The abstract and unique artstyle only help to illustrate (pun) the unquantifiable nature of life itself, as this book demonstrates. The ending is quite depressing and just shows how pathetic civilizations can be and how people (or aliens in this case, but they're interchangeable with humans anyways) will always find a way to hate others and go to war with them.

This is a must buy for any Surfer fan or anyone who just enjoys a good story in general.

I had recently bought this TPB and was beyond excited to read it. Then I did, and realized that some stuff really didn't work for me. The story I thought was very so-so. But my big problem all together is that every now and then you catch the Surfer saying things that the Surfer would never say. For example, right in the beginning of the story when he gets attacked by organ pirates,"Don't make me kill you!" the Surfer warns. That is not how the Silver Surfer warns people. He would say something to the extent of,"Do not force my hand!" or "You have given me no choice!" or something of the like. Also some of the Surfer's thoughts end up being just as shallow as some of his words. Not to mention, as the story progresses the artwork gets way to intense. I mean I love Tan Eng Haut's work on Ghost Rider, but I could not for the life of me get into the art. There were way to many colors, and everybody's body looks so stringy. Like nobody eats or has any muscle mass. I will admit that I did read this AFTER I read 'Requiem' but this story did nothing for me.

Personally, I didn't didn't feel the character of the Silver Surfer is fairly represented here.

I liked this one because it was more unique. The Surfer discovers that not even a great external threat can prevent war between 2 sides who are bent on destruction. Surfer also has to utilize his Spirit to defeat a monster or "demon" then allies with it to try to force peace between 2 alien races. The art could have been better as I did not like the weird facial features of the Surfer in this. I love the internal reflection of the Surfer in this. If you think this was an antireligion comic you miss the point because it wasn't about that. It was about how both atheists or religious can both bring suffering/horror while the teeming un-thinking life forms are less destructive on such a grande scale. Sentience only makes death happen on a larger grander scale.

Out of all the superhuman and mutants from Marvel the Silver Surfer has to be my favourite character, mainly cause he is a profound character and has a very unique look on life aswell as a very unique life itself, and it is always interesting to how he handles the troubles of the universe.

So when i read In Thy Name, i was very impressed, Simon Spurrier is a sensational writer for the Silver Surfer and really gets into he's head and manages to really show us what the Silver Surfer is thinking as well as bringing in a bit of Norman Radd to show the struggle he has trying to balance the life of the Silver Surfer, and the past of Norman Radd.

But not only do you get a creative and indepth story of the Silver Surfers attempt to find a Utopia, but Tan Eng Huat has done a sensational job with the artwork, yet to be honest it is the reason i only gave it a 4 stars (that and it was too short, definatly could of read it for alot longer) but the artwork is amazing but almost too detailed, there is alot of detail in many of the characters that gets lost in the hype of the frame and often is hard to define whats what and whos fighting who. But for the SS himself, he just looks sensational and Huat has really done a fantastic job with showing off SS' powers and combined with Spurrier we really get to see exactly how powerful the Silver Surfer is.

I definatly advise all SS fans to read this and anyone that is looking for something a lil deeper than Marvels standard Avengers or Ultimate series.
