About the Author

Unconventional author/artist Hiroyuki Takei began his career by winning the coveted Hop Step Award (for new manga artists) and the Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize (named after the famous artist of the same name). After working as an assistant to famed artist Nobuhiro Watsuki, Takei debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1997 with Butsu Zone, an action series based on Buddhist mythology. His multicultural adventure manga Shaman King, which debuted in 1998, became a hit and was adapted into an anime TV series. Takei lists Osamu Tezuka, American comics and robot anime among his many influences.

“SK” first has us meet school student Manta Oyamata who has a bit of a worrisome-spastic behavior. His life changes forever when he meets new transfer student Yuh Asakura who happens to be a shaman in training. A shaman is someone who has the ability to see spirits and use their special powers and in a big surprise, Manta also can see spirits and with his new friend he will encounter plenty of ghostly adventures.

It’s a very fun and exciting manga about spirits and action mixed together very well. Plenty of funny moments from Manta as well. More spirited antics that I hope to see for sure, Shamone! A- (91%/Excellent)

I remember being a kid in middle school and Shaman King started showing on Fox Kids. I was blown away by the show (not so much with the bad dubbing, but what can you do 😆). This series holds a special place in my heart from my childhood. Now I'm so glad I can reread the whole series instantly on Kindle! I'm getting back into Shaman King all over again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Extra scenes the anime doesn't show

Definitely recommended to people who feel that Shaman King as an anime is fast paced. It dives in a little deeper and tells more story than just watching them.

× A few more ghost encounters than what was in the anime
× Ryu's group had a bit more information than what you'll know from the anime.
× The way Ren found Yoh is different in the manga

I grew up with a huge crush on Amidamaru, probably because of how dedicated he was to his friends. A girl needs that in life. But putting my romantic thoughts for an animated character (of a ghost, no less) aside, Shaman King is one of those amazing series that shows real facets to people. Hands down, a must read classic.

Awesome series, too bad amazon prices went up so i'll just rate it as 4 stars, though the manga is 5 stars.
