Gives to the New, but Remembers of the Old

Very captivating and draws your attention to this graphic novel. I have never read the original novels, but watched the 1st movie and this is great for both those new to the series and for the old it will nostalgic. I didn't expect to it to be planned so great, many questions and statements made that are philosophical and help you understand Shaft as he is really 'a complicated man' in both character development and plot, as well introducing other characters you will see in the cinema series. I recommend to this book to any one doesn't mind a little blood or some vulgar, but I think you can still ignore that if that steers you away as the theme of the book is implemented so well to this story.

The art style and design is so appealing it hurt to pull away and not keep my eye on the drawings and colors until reaching the next caption. And theirs bounces art for those who couldn't get enough of it. The illustrators/artists of this novel hopefully collaborate with the writer/author so we get more books for this series.

Best graphic novel I have read in a long time.

Great story and outstanding art work. The story takes place earlier in Shaft's life and details how he became a private detective. The extras at the end of the graphic novel were nice. Walked provided samples of his script and the art work from the page the artist drew from script. Alternate covers were also included in this section. I liked this enough I plan on purchasing the next graphic novel about Shaft.

I hope he continue working in comics- this is a traditional private eye novel - well set as a period piece (granted the period is more modern than Sam Spade) and incredibly well executed. Now to go read the original Tidyman if I can find him. If you like crime/detective/mystery comics this needs to be on your list. A modern classic. Review 1261

He has managed this “origins” tale with skill and created a colourful cast of supporting characters. The artwork by Bilquis Evely is exquisite and she has captured the spirit of late 1960s Manhattan. The 6 comic book series, collected in the trade paperback, has been a triumph and a credit to Walker’s determination to re-introduce a beloved cultural icon to a modern audience.
