HC build details
Most people know the story and the art (both good), so I will cover the actual HC pieces. Bonus covers and art is included but no real extras such as sketchbook or script material. The paper is not as flimsy as others and no immediate ripples in the pages upon opening but pages with a white background are still see through. The binding is glued and tight and there is a pretty high gutter loss from cover to cover. With Ribic using the whole page for many of his panels it is a shame. The hc also does not include the digital copy (a trend Marvel seems to have eliminated as of late). The size is great for the artwork which makes the gutter loss a bigger issue as you may not miss "much", but you do have to open "dangerously" to see it in full. One thing I have to mention, the book smells... a lot. In the store I had assumed someone with dirty hands had read it before and luckily there was a still wrapped copy. I opened it at home and it smelled the same, almost like a dirty fish bowl. Not sure if it is the glue, the paper, or what, but it really does have an odor, enough to make me move it from the room when I was done reading it.All in all if you loved the story or have waited (like I did) to buy it for the hc and the art it is worth it, but nothing about it earns a $50 price tag. The discounts make it "recommended buy" if you know the problems going in.

I’m a big comics fan! This is one of my favorite Comics series.

If you want a physical edition rather than a Kindle edition (as a comic reader for 30+ years I still prefer reading comics printed on paper), I recommend the paperback version.
The paperback copy I purchased was in excellent condition. The binding was firm, no loose pages or cracks in the spine. The paper was glossy and high quality. When reading I was never distracted by any physical flaws. My one complaint is that the map of Battleworld is printed in middle of the volume so some of it is lost in the binding, but that didn't affect my ability to enjoy the story.
Supplemental material included a gallery of all the variant covers (and there were lots for this series). They also included the Free Comic Book Day Secret Wars #0 at the end, despite the fact that its story is more of a prelude than a postlude. As far as I can tell the hardcover doesn't have any other special bonuses. This is not a situation where the publisher cut corners producing the paperback, but the hardcover is the "prestige" version. The hardback doesn't give you any more material or any better reading experience, but it costs more.
Concerning the story told in this volume, I would call it a satisfying bow to the long story Hickman told through various Marvel titles. I cannot say how much you would enjoy it without reading his Fantastic Four or Avengers books before. Having read them this felt like a brilliant capstone on a monumental work. Esad Ribic's art has a touch of high fantasy to gives this story that epic quality. Ive Svorcina deserves mention for his color work which deeply enhances every page. Even among the universe of Marvel stories, this felt special, like a myth superheroes would tell. I loved it!

I knew this would be a must read for me, to witness the end of the universe I'd come to know and love, and see how it would start anew. But I didn't know that I would love every minute of the read! I expected epic collisions, huge battles, and a ominous, but empty plot on the way to the reboot. But I was surprised to find a character rich, plot driven, phsycological, ethereal, and rewarding story. The action was as promised, and the art was fantastic throughout, but as I read, I found myself entrapped in a deep story that begged to be read. The plot gave justice to the long history of the Marvel universe, with cameos and references throughout, but it wasn't cheap, and it wasn't a gimmick. It was a plot that could only be fully explored and keep you on the edge if your seat with a knot in your stomach by the universes being destroyed with no magic undo at the end. The consequences were real and lasting, which lent credence to the epic proportions. The build of the plot didn't feel rushed or forced as I had expected, but it felt properly paced to ease you through each transition and the realization that you'll never see this vast universe the same way again. Though the 'resolution' into the 'prime earth' of the new Marvel universe closed to quickly for my taste, the whole volume was a rewarding and exciting read. A must read for any Marvel fan from any era.

Overall, the end of Jonathan Hickmans run is quite epic and exciting. Although it could have arrived in better condition I still recommend the book.

Can't wait to see how all of this plays out in the MCU. Secret Wars was a twisty and incredible ride. Black Panther and Reed Richard's are central to the fight against Doctor Doom. Doom helped to save the universe but is holding on too tight and has become a selfish God. From a planet of Thors to a showdown between Thanos and Doom, this comic has it all. Definitely one to have on your radar with the upcoming plans for the MCU.

I love this book! It it is an amazing mix of characters, settings, and art. It makes all the years of build-up worth it. And that's not counting all the side stories connected to it.

Secret Wars is the phenomenal culmination of Hickman's Marvel work, building all the way from his masterful Fantastic Four run. His Fantastic Four is some of my absolute favorite comics, and at the end of the day, Secret Wars is a Reed and Doom story, as the two face off with the absolute highest stakes possible. It would be tough to explain the events that brought us here, but there are seeds sewn in the first issue of Hickman's Fantastic Four, that bear fruit in this story, which in truth, could absolutely be read apart from his FF and Avengers work. Surprisingly, Hickman has a spectacular handle on each character's voice, outside of the Reed and Doom dynamic, cementing himself in the top echelon of modern comic book writers. I can't get enough of this guy, and Secret Wars is a GN worthy of the biggest, baddest fantasy novels. Secret Wars is much more than just another event comic, and while we do sort of stumble through the finish line into what's next, that payoff for me was grand and emotional. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything Great About Marvel, Distilled Into A Single Volume
Reviewed in the Netherlands on April 8, 2022
The book itself arrived in relatively pristine condition. As you can tell by the product description, this is a single-volume omnibus that collects the entire 2015 Secret Wars event, the Jonathan Hickman run, into a single book. As someone more used to reading manga, I was surprised by the sheer size (lengthwise, that is), as well as colourfulness and glossy texture of the pages. This is definitely an event to be experienced in print rather than pixels. The story, as well as the penmanship hooked me instantly. I finished the entire book in one sitting, which is no small feat, because while I'm a bibliophile who has been reading books, both novels/novellas and comics, from a young age, this is no small book either. A surface knowledge of the various characters/factions involved in this event helps, but is not absolutely necessary. If you're an MCU stan, and watch channels like The Den Of Nerds, Nerdist and New Rockstars, you should already have enough knowledge to be able to enjoy this tome without being overly confused. The concept of 'Variants' from Loki and more recent MCU titles like Spider-Man: No Way Home and the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel is helpful and makes moments that should confuse a complete newbie not only understandable, but also highly enjoyable. How the comic book versions of certain characters like Thanos, the Mad Titan, differ from their MCU avatars helps, but is not needed. Regardless of whether you picture the Mad Titan as Josh Brolin, or the comic book baddie created by Jim Starlin, his behaviour in this run will not confuse you, nor will that of certain allied characters. Similarly, certain characters like T'Challa and Peter Parker act very similar to their on-screen versions. It is hard to look at T'Challa and not fondly remember the late Chadwick Boseman. Similarly, Spider-Man is very reminiscent of Raimi-Verse (Tobey Maguire) Spider-Man, and Miles Morales seems very similar to the one from Sony's new CGI universe(s) [I haven't actually watched Into the Spiderverse yet; please don't cast me out as a heretic.]. The plot twists are not always the most predictable either, at least for someone who has never encountered characters not currently in the MCU-19999 timeline before, and this makes for some really entertaining and shocking moments. Overall, an extremely entertaining, enthralling and beautiful comic book run, which makes me want to read the original Secret Wars run from the '80s, since certain key characters like Miles Morales, did not even exist back then. Would I read it again? Yes, but only to understand details that eluded me on my first read. This also makes me curious as to how Kevin Feige and team will pull off the Secret Wars event in the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse, presumably helmed by the visionary Russo brothers. My only real gripe with this run is the palpable lack of Deadpool, at least front and center. But that's a compromise I might have to make for now. With Deadpool joining the MCU-19999 timeline soon, his presence in the on-screen Secret Wars event is almost certainly guaranteed, given how much merch Ryan Reynolds moves.
