This is the best crossover story Marvel has produced.
The ultra loyal familial bonds (brotherly between Baron Zemo and Hydra Steve Rogers; mother/son between Madame Hydra and Hydra Steve Rogers) is incredibly compelling. Sam Wilson's elevation is truly a highlight (one of many in this story). I love what Nick Spencer did with this. Steve Rogers is the focal point of the story. He comes out of the story shining even more as the ultimate hero. At the same time, in the scenes Sam Wilson is in, he is displayed as every bit Steve Rogers's equal. They both do things in their own way. Secret Empire elevates Sam Wilson and Steve Rogers.
Hydra Steve Rogers may be the most formidable villain now in the Marvel universe. He is written so well by Spencer. Much of his dialogue is written in such a top quality way. It helps to let the reader see the way he thinks and creates an understanding that overall makes sense.
The art is excellent.
Hopefully Marvel will put out more stories like this. It shows a creative freedom that is often times missing within the context of American comic book story telling.
The back story is more complicated. Rogers personal timeline got changed by a cosmic cube thus his new allegiance to Hydra. But, being who he is and his willpower causes him to realize that all would be better with himself in charge of Hydra and Hydra in charge of everything else. Making Captain America into the villain was the most controversial thing that Marvel could have done.
Is it a good story? Each issue can be read separately as there are no connecting threads and the overall story is broken up at random. The solidification of power by Hydra, the resistance, the heroes at the space station, New York City as prison, and the small vignettes with Black Panther, Namor, and the X-men all compete for attention. However, now that it is in a collected edition the story seems more readable. Despite the flaws the story moves along and qualifies for 3.5 - 4 stars.
The art changes hands a few times which is understandable given the overall length of the book. Mostly dark in tone and each chapter stays consistent. Again, 3.5 - 4 stars. The format is another matter. Hardcover price is a big $60! Yes, most of the single issues were five dollars each but only the hard collectors will want to purchase this one. Granted the price one pays might fluctuate (Civil War 2 was half-price less than a month it came out) but the most cost effective is currently the digital version on kindle. The plus to this edition is one can zoom in the panels that will be smaller in the print volume. Worth the 12.50? Yes, since the singles were larger than normal its like having twenty-four comics bundled.
Final thoughts- Marvel did change things even though a lot was returned to normal. The "real" Steve Rogers is imprisoned and still committed to the principles of Hydra. The "new" Steve Rogers is really a construct made by the cosmic cube. Not taken out of time or a clone but a memory fragment made real. So this Captain America is essentially a blank slate with no ties to the past and must deal with the fallout. One can say that the real Steve Rogers died on the field in action at Pleasant Hill (another story) and that's all right. That's the way he would have wanted it.
RIP: Black Widow, Rick Jones.
Collects Secret Empire 1-10, 0, Omega, and Capt. America 25.
The art is top notch all throughout. There a lot of artists but all are A listers like Daniel Acuna, Andrea Sorrentino, Steve McNiven, Leinil Francis Yu, Rod Reis, and more.
Spencer's whole Captain America run plus this event has a lot of social commentary going on which I like. Make art with meaning. Even if it is a "silly" superhero book. Our democracy can be lost. And we the people may be the ones to give it away to demagogues. Such a true take on today's political climate.
Such a great event and the culmination of a crazy exciting Captain America saga for the ages.
