I implore everyone who likes the creative team involved to pick up this series and (politely) ask them for more.
So why didn't I like it? Oh, where do I start? The writing is terrible! And the art seemed flat. I know this is an animation term but everything looked like it was "Roto-Scoped", which might explain why certain character reactions seemed off.
The entire plot is a structural mess glued together by numerous flashbacks that are mostly unnecessary. Typically a plot is meant to be a series of events that get the Protagonist to react a certain way. But the Protagonist barely makes any choices throughout the "story". Our "hero" is Josh Miller, a College grad, trying to prove his worth as a soon to be father. The problem is, he's woefully underdeveloped as a character. His struggles aren't unique from anyone else. Who isn't looking for a good job? Who doesn't want to be a good father? What I want to know is, what makes his character special? What are the roots to his struggle? And why, do the antagonists, choose him to carry out their deeds? Over anyone else? Throughout the story he's used as a puppet, effectively taking away his ability to make choices, but the problem is, the unique choices a protagonist makes, are what makes an interesting, developed character. And ultimately a developed character is what makes a story, a STORY. Because of that, the dialogue, for the most part, is flat. None of the characters stand out. And most of the characters, spend their time explaining what's going on and their motives. Did no one ever tell the creators, "less talk, more action". Don't explain, why you are doing these things, show me, let me see it through your actions and let me see it in REAL TIME. Flashbacks only work if they enhance the present time, otherwise, sneak it into the plot some other way.
It's a real shame because I love Klaus Janson's work, as an illustrator. His writing on the other hand, leaves much to be desired. I could go on and on about what didn't work for me but if the problems I brought up, don't bother you, maybe you'll like it. But for me, I'll be more careful when I see so many rave reviews and I'll probably just stick to Mr. Janson's illustrations (when he's illustrating for someone else) and stay clear of his writing.
