Runners Volume 1: Bad Goods Kindle & comiXology

5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 8 ratings

Intergalactic smuggling isn't easy when you're hounded by pirates, bounty hunters, police, and the occasional conscience...

It's just another day in the life of reluctant smuggler Roka Nostaco and his ragtag alien crew as they struggle to complete a particularly dangerous run for the mob. Their adventure takes them from shootouts with pirates to ship-to-ship dogfights with ruthless bounty hunters, culminating in an all-out, three-way ship, cycle, and foot chase through the streets of an alien space station. All the while, they also have to contend with a vengeful mercenary, a ghost from the past, and a mysterious alien girl lying unconscious on their cargo bay floor!

Special features include pronunciation guide, ship floor plans, sketchbook pages, character turnarounds, and the original short story that introduced the universe and cast of characters.

Sean Wang, an MIT architecture graduate, got his start in the comics industry writing and drawing seasonal specials for THE TICK, published by New England Comics. He also wrote and illustrated the 6-issue TICK AND ARTHUR series, in which the duo joined a superteam of equally-dysfunctional heroes.

In 2006, Sean illustrated MELTDOWN for Image Comics, which chronicles the final days of a volatile superhero. The series garnered major critical acclaim for Sean's use of a variety of art styles to tell different aspects of the story.

Sean is best known for his highly-acclaimed series, RUNNERS, a fun sci-fi action comedy about alien smugglers. The first graphic novel collection RUNNERS: BAD GOODS made several reviewers’ Best of 2005 lists. The second volume, RUNNERS: THE BIG SNOW JOB, was released online from 2009-2012 and was funded as a graphic novel via a very successful Kickstarter campaign in 2013. Both RUNNERS volumes are now available in print as graphic novels and also in webcomic form for free online at www.runnersuniverse.com.

From 2009-2017, Sean has also contributed illustrations to various LEGO magazines and Scholastic reader books. As of 2017, he has resumed working on RUNNERS, outlining the remainder of the epic story and preparing to finish the series of graphic novels.

I met Sean Wang at DragonCon in 2018 and spent a fun half hour discussing space opera and comic books. I brought my comic book writing experience from the 1980s indie comics scene and my current experience writing prose space opera (my books are all available from Amazon) to the discussion, while Sean brought his experience with the current indie comic book scene and his love of space opera. By the time we finished talking, I had the black & white version of Bad Goods and The Big Snow Job tucked under my arm.

Short version: I loved Bad Goods so much I pre-ordered the color version as soon as I saw Sean's announcement.

Longer version: Sean writes and draws an exciting story, filled with aliens, adventure, scrapes with the law, worse scrapes with rival outlaws, and adds an intriguing mystery to the mix. Runners is the kind of science fiction that drew me to the field back in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It has the same fun vibe that made Star Wars such a huge hit, with enticing glimpses at a wide galaxy filled with wonder. Anyone who grew up reading Niven's Beowulf Shaeffer stories or the Han Solo stories set before the events in A New Hope will feel right at home in the Runners universe.

This is seriously good, seriously fun stuff. Give it a try.

If you love Star Wars, Firefly, Cowboy Bebop, or just the prospect of a misfit band of aliens taking part in dogfights, shootouts, and witty banter out in the unlimited confines of space, then look no further! Meet the crew of the Koruysa Brimia, a team of smugglers leaping and bounding through outlaw space avoiding all sorts of dangers to reach their next paycheck all in one piece.

Masterful artwork and story telling leaves you itching to see what's on every page to come. I cannot recommend this series enough for any fan of sci-fi or even fantasy.

Top notch!

I picked up the original B&W volume of Runners after reading a review. I wanted more. So I ended up with volume 2, and then the color version of volume 1 from Kickstarter. Such a great series with awesome art and fun characters.

If you're a fan of comics and SciFi like classic Star Wars and Firefly, this is simply something you have to try.

My only wish, was that there was more!

This is a great independent sci-fi series of graphic novels. There are nods to Star Wars and other popular franchises, but in the main the series is fresh and unique. The characters are interesting, the art is of high quality, and the writing keeps you guessing what will happen next. I highly recommend it.

Do you like your aliens crazy cool ala Star Wars? Do you like your crew banter slick ala Firefly? Do you like your smooth criminals golden-hearted ala Guardians of the Galaxy? Then you will love Runners!

Third time I've purchased this. Now I have the full set in color. You can buy directly from the author under all options if you want. This is like Firefly before Firefly. It's a great series.

Terrific sci-fi adventure with action, heart, and humor. The story is as excellent as the artwork. Highly recommended!

Seriously one of my favorite series I’ve ever read. You cannot go wrong diving in.
