Common tragedies can bind two people together, sometimes in all the wrong ways. The investigation into a famous comic book creator’s relationship with a deranged young girl takes the detective to places he never wanted to go. Witness how a woman raised to fear the squid invasion and distrust facts seeks a man whose creations embody strength, justice, and truth, and compels him to trade his paper heroes for flesh and blood.

Tom King has a lot of haters and I’m not going to say it’s entirely undeserved. His writing style isn’t for everyone and he really left a bad taste in a lot of peoples mouths with Heroes in Crisis. However, at this point I only have two comic series preordered, Rorschach and Strange Adventures so it’s all Tom King for me. The early concerns I saw regarding Rorschach was that King intended to get political. In this issue, we hear the debate between President Redford and Governor Turley, and I have to say that it is very relevant to what is happening today in American politics. Personally, I’m fine with injecting some politics and it’s really silly to complain before the series even starts.

Rorschach is a very slow moving, methodical series. If you’re looking for a series featuring a violent right-wing vigilante meting out justice, then keep looking. Most of this issue is about the correspondence and growing friendship between Wil Myerson and Laura Cummings. There are no superpowers or heroic battles. Just two people writing letters to each other. If you’re not enjoying the character interactions I’m sure this can be a dreadfully dull series.

Rorschach got an 8.3 aggregate score on ComicBookRoundup for the first four issues and then dipped to an 8.0 with issue 5. I don’t put any significance on such a small drop and there has likewise been a drop in the number of reviews, which is common as a series progresses. Issue #6 currently has an 8.2 which was really dragged down by a single 4.0 along with a handful of much more complimentary reviews. The User Score has averaged a slightly higher 8.5, which is still very solid. Rorschach currently has the 8th highest average score for any ongoing series at DC while Strange Adventures is in second place. That’s some really good numbers for Mr. King.
