I did enjoy this reading. I am not a graphic novel reader. But I enjoyed the story line of the movie and found the basis was from this book.

I grabbed Ellis's RED after finding out it was the original source for the movies - of which I very much enjoyed (big Bruce Willis fan). The art is crisp and the story is simple. CIA operator is VERY good at his job, wants to retire, but knows too much so must be silenced. Of course, Paul Moses is able to REACH retirement because he's VERY good at his job; and not appreciating trying to be killed, takes it out on the CIA. Without giving away the books ending, I felt it was just getting started! I was just getting into it and BOOM! the book ends??

Now it really seems this is a book in search of a sequel, but the 1st part of the ride was pretty cool. A good buy if you can get a deal on it.

This graphic novel is gritty. I enjoyed the look at what the world does with intelligence operatives once they retire. The idea is fascinating.

This was fun. Quick (VERY quick) read, if you're looking for something that's not that long and has great art. A retired spy/lone wolf/man with a vengeance story. John Wick crossed with The Old Man (though it predates Jeff Bridge's FX show by MANY years), it follows a retired (one man army) killer. The biggest BadA$$/don't mess with him, assassin the American government has ever employed. They decide he's a liability and to take him out. He, kills EVERYBODY! Lots of violence and TONS of headshots. Cully Hamner is at the top of his game here. A masterclass in visual storytelling and use of shadows to control mood and suspense. Warren Ellis can write... People sound fine when talking, and the plot is straightforward and simple to follow, but it FLIES by! It's over in the blink of an eye, and when it's over, it's EXTREMELY open-ended! We're talking, "Wait! What? It's over!?! over. It's 74 pages, and EASILY could have ended the arc definitively in the last pages... or added an issue to flesh out an ending and hint at, or build into, the idea of possibly having a sequel. Instead, this feels like Ellis heard he didn't have to finish and just went on to other stuff. The main character shares a name and the same look of Bruce Willis in the movie of the same name and its sequel, but that's pretty much where the similarities end. There's a small character sketch section and the printed script for the first issue with the uncolored Inks of pages at the end of the book.

Excellent story, about the world's best killer. Moses is forced from retirement by an appointed political flunky who's afraid of the world ever learning an operative like Moses exists. If your only exposure to this character is through the movie then you MUST read this book. You'll discover a deeper insight into the assassin who's so deadly that the CIA classified him R.E.D. (Retired Extremely Dangerous).

Certainly a more violent and grittier story than the movies. Darker. But 100% fun anyways. let sleeping dragons lie. Or they paint the town red.

This is a great comic book. If you saw the movie and want to read the comic, be aware, this comic tells a story slightly similar to the movie but amazingly different in its structure. You have the ex-CIA being chased and its vendetta against the company, that's all.
The tale told here is amazing, is a story about a man that had only one purpose when active and after the retirement wanted to be left alone, that's all. You understand his morals, his trainning and his mind. It's more about the psychological state of someone that killed all his life than the killings or the vendetta.
It is a great comic book, amazing writing and drawing, and something that should be read by everyone who's interested in comics.
But it's not the movie, not at all.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's not what you might think.
Reviewed in Canada on October 1, 2012
It's a pretty good book. Nothing fancy. Kinda cool. Very dark. Though it's not what you might think. It's short as hell, for starters. I mean Half the page count is just extras like scripts, concept designs, and things like that. Secondly I must say, that if you want to read this because of the movie, you might be disappointed. The film was much longer, and had alot more to it, and much was changed from the book you see here. The book is virtually humourless, by comparison, and it's just a straightforward story about what happens when you wake up a monster that was content to just live out his life, and leave the world in peace. I'd say this is an OK read if you like Ellis, and have 10-15 minutes to kill, but I would not advise paying more than five dollars for it. I would also not advise reading this if the movie had any motivation for you to seek out this book. Three Stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short. Very short.
Reviewed in Germany on September 1, 2010
Although the story and the artwork are excellent - and one can see it's easy translation to movie format - the story is exceptionally short. I thought "Kick-Ass" was quite short, but "Red" is even shorter. Don't be fooled by the number of pages shown in the description, the latter half of the book contains examples of the typewritten script, and how this translated into storyboards and the final pencil drawings.

I would recommend comic book aficionado's to buy this in paperback, as it is not too expensive, and we should foster the creation of such works, but there is the need, for me at least, to get some worth for my hard earned money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short taut thriller
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 11, 2009
Warren Ellis does it yet again with RED.

Paul Moses is an ex CIA operative. He travelled around the world, did unspeakable things for his country and retired. He checks in to confirm that he is still inoperative (Green) until one day it is decided that he needs to be removed. One kill squad later Moses is forced to reconsider his options. He phones in and confirms that he is now operative (Red). This is his story. He tries to make sense of why anyone would want to force him out of retirement, but it's not really in his psyche to ask questions - he butchers his way to his answers. The artwork captures the mood of the story exactly and Culley Hamner's drawings are a match for Ellis's script.

It's a tautly written roller coaster of a ride. It's a short book, it was originally a 3 issue mini series and it's padded with the script to episode 1 and some demo art. I like it 9/10

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Short Read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 22, 2015
A fun book. Not a very complex story, but the artwork is brilliantly detailed. Could have made a very good movie from this, unfortunately they just made a generic comedy. Some good dialogue and fun characters, this is a fun book to burn some time with.

2.0 out of 5 stars Kurz und schmerzvoll
Reviewed in Germany on August 5, 2013
