This is the first Red Sonja story by Dynamite that actually frequently refers to the places on the map in the first pages of the colletion. For that fact alone makes this one of the best Red Sonja collections by Dynamite to date.

The artwork is above average and very detailed, my only complaint is, like most depictions of women in comics, is that is doesn't make much sense that Sonja is wearing makeup and lipstick if she is supposed to be a warrior, but we don't buy comics because they're realistic, we buy them because they're fun.

I picked this book up because I've really liked the author's other work starting with Flash Gordon and then Vampirella (apparently I'm reading his stuff backwards). This did not disappoint at all. Although it is the 9th volume and covers something like issue 51-55 it I didn't get lost in knowing what was going on or who these people are. This is pretty rare for long lasting comics that if you miss on issue you're going to be hitting google to find out a crazy back story or what is going on in the first chapter of the book.

Overall the story is fairly simple in a good way a mercenary is hired to protect a town then bad guys come and things get awesome. There are some wizardly things in it for good measure to not make it all Xena warrior princess like. The banter between Red Sonja and her friends is a lot of fun with many lol's. This might be not be complicated story but really it doesn't need to be its full on entertainment with enough of a twist to make you not see everything that's coming. If you're looking for something that is a bit like Conan or xena this will work very well.

One thing that does stand out for me through reading this and all of Trautmann's other works is that he really likes to use a lot of words. Not so many that it seems unrealistic but way more then what many current comic writers use. This is a huge plus for me as you can't finish the book in a matter of ten minutes like other titles. It leaves you feeling like you got just as complete of a read as if you were reading a novel.

Also, the artwork is fantastic there was only a little bit of tasteful T&A that made sense within the story but besides that it was all very gorgeously rendered art that was maybe more realistic then what I was expecting.

I have not even finished reading volume 9, however it is clearly very different than all of the other volumes. Number 9 has a much more detailed storyline involving wars among the southern kingdoms, with one of those territories trapped in the conflict. It seems like a more serious adventure not so much having Red Sonja as the focus. It is a more mature effort, but that does not mean that I want it to be that way! Yet I'll take it, but they should increase the size of the book to 200 pages. If they go in this direction, than when can we see the movie?
