When the new Valiant began publishing in 2012, the question that was consistently asked by fans across the country was “Will there be a new Quantum & Woody?” You knew it was only a matter of time before Valiant said “Yes.” Thank goodness they did!!

A little history lesson: The original Quantum & Woody harkens back to the Acclaim Valiant Heroes era, and is looked upon by many in comic-dom as one of the few successes from the line, as well as one of the cult hits of the Nineties. Created by Priest and Bright, the title mixed endearing characters with humorous stories that walked a very fine tight rope of ‘politically correct” humor. It also introduced a goat, of all things, as the sidekick. Who’d a thunk it? Unfortunately, Acclaim eventually folded, and the Valiant comics went with it. It seemed that Q&W was destined to fade into obscurity…

Fortunately, the new Valiant had other plans, and a new Quantum & Woody debuted in July, 2013. Written by James Asmus and drawn by Tom Fowler, this reimagined “World’s Worst Superhero Team” kept many of the original themes in place. The premise: Eric and Woody Henderson, estranged foster brothers, are reunited after years of zero contact by the mysterious death of their father, a brilliant scientist. Eric is the uptight, straight laced military man, Woody is the shady, ready to pick your pocket and run off with your girlfriend, con-man. To say they don’t get along would be an understatement! Investigating their father’s suspicious demise, they stumble into a laboratory accident which converts their bodies to energy… granting them super-powers, but also requiring that they KLANG together metal control bands (now fused to their arms) once every 24 hours, or they will dissipate into atoms. Now, two men who genuinely are annoyed by each other are stuck together. And, eventually, they get a goat. A terrifying, bloodthirsty, intelligent goat.

What follows is a truly entertaining story. To be honest, I had my doubts about how good this series could be with inevitable comparisons to the original, but I’m happy to report that this new version is in more than capable hands. Funny, endearing, and with humor that can go waaaaaaaaay over the line, this is Quantum & Woody reimagined for a new generation.

I have seen many fans write off Quantum & Woody due to the sometimes sophomoric humor. I encourage you, dear reader, to give it a chance. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised! Come see another side of the Valiant Universe… just don’t pet the goat!

This comic series is, unfortunately, mediocre at best. I was really hoping to like it (Given that I’m starved for entertainment during quarantine) but the humor is weak and I just can’t bring myself to spend more money on the second volume to see if the story improves. Also, and this was Amazon’s fault, the book was in very Poor condition when it arrived, although the packaging was perfect, which tells me it was in bad shape when it was on the shelf in the warehouse, the back cover was crumpled and creased, and the binding was pulling away from the cover and had almost separated from top to bottom.

A good superhero comedy series with brothers. It's ridiculous and stupid at some points, but that's what makes it so good.

So after all the buzz coming out of Valiant comics lately, I gave it a shot with getting my hands on their flagship series X-O Manowar, which I loved. I had a hankering for more of Valiant's titles from a different perspective away from the action: comedy. Although there is the other comedic series Archer & Armstrong, I decided to try Quantum and Woody first because the first trade just came out. And how is this this series? A truly humorous, yet emotional series to my surprise.

QUANTUM AND WOODY VOL.1: THE WORLD'S WORST SUPERHERO TEAM collects issues #1-4. Eric Henderson and Woody are adoptive brothers who spent their early years fighting with each other for Dad's appreciation. Things fell apart over the years with Eric going into the Army and Woody dropping out of high school. After years of estrangement they are brought together by the mysterious death of their father, Derek Henderson (Woody's foster father) who was looking into a new power source. They set out to find their father's killer and, in the course of their investigation, are accidentally imbued with powers from their fathers invention which the murderer's want. Now the world thinks they killed their own father and are hunted by the police and this mysterious organization. What's the best way to continue their investigation and not been seen by the authorities? Become superheroes of course! Oh...and there's a goat as well.

Much of the original Q&W series storyline is in tact with some minor tweaks for fans and yet still a good starting point for new fans as well, but this new series is a truly laugh out loud experience for itself regardless of new or old fans. Eric is the straight man of the duo who tries to make sense of things, keep Woody under control, and has defensive powers, while Woody is the sarcastic, lazy, and chatterbox who gets them into trouble with the offensive powers. A combination like that, you'll see why they are "The World's worst superhero team" and for good reason. None the less, seeing the two's Every sight gag, film reference, or topical jokes like racism ("No. I wore makeup designed to match your skin complexion. As a disguise. That's #*#%^$&@ Blackface!"), political correctness (you were right. Those costumes look gay. Oh, I didn't mean "gay" in a derogatory sense. I literately looked like my friend Gay Dave who I used to go clubbing with. And I don't want to send ladies the wrong signal). The jokes keep is thrown in for an enjoyable experience of these two siblings clash with one another while finding their father's killer and get to understanding their powers.

While is also surprising for me is the more somber moments in-between the large chunks of humor. We get some flashbacks to Eric and Woody's perspectives with their father that eases the off the humor and shows this series does have it's moments of good character moments.

And the goat on the cover? Well he doesn't actually make his appearance until issue #4, but oh-boy...wait til you see what happens.

Art is done by Tom Fowler who fits the comedic style very well. He's doesn't draw up to the same high level of detail as many artist do now and days, but again, his art is a bit cartoony and exaggerated for the humor and it broods well.

I really didn't have a problem with the series, but if there was anything that might have been toned down just a little is Woody. The character is hilarious to a fault, but there were times I wished he wasn't so brazen. I get it he is the problem child, but he doesn't have an off-switch to everything he does. The guy never takes anything seriously where he might come off as too-much of a jerk, if that makes sense? I enjoy his character a lot, I just think maybe some readers might get that same vibe about him being who he is too often then needs be.

QUANTUM AND WOODY! VOL.1: THE WORLD'S WORST SUPERHERO TEAM continues to show why Valiant is on a roll in the comic world that more people should take notice of. A truly entertaining book with laughs left and right, action, and some good character moments. Though some think Woody is a tad too much for the character. I'm giving this series a 4 1/2 star out of five, but I'm rounding down to 4 stars. Still a truly enjoyable series. And you think Marvel's Deadpool is the funniest character out there? Quantum and Woody would say otherwise. Well, actually, Woody would say "move over loser and let the big boys take the spotlight!" and Eric saying "yeah, what he said!".

Quantum and Woody is pure, irreverent fun. These guys are something else, although they resemble a couple of guys from a buddy cop movie. The comic format is perfect for capturing their antics, which begin almost immediately after they meet. These guys are adopted brothers that are constantly vying for their father's attention until he dies under mysterious circumstances.

I like their relationship a lot. They were inseparable until Woody pulled a stunt that forced him to leave. Combined with their daddy issues it creates a good amount of tension between the two men. And Woody's crass nature and general disregard for the rules doesn't help things any. The way they gain their powers, and ultimately how they decide to use them, ties things together really well. Then there is the goat.

Tom Fowler's art is great. It creates a cinematic feel that meshes well with the story and character personalities. Bring on more Quantum and Woody!

For me this is the worst tpb I have read from Valiant since the re-launch. It is still a fun read though and the series apparently get's much better as it goes.
Good but far away from the quality of X-O Manowar, Archer and Armstrong, Harbinger etc...
