Simple, and short, but interesting the whole while

I picked up a handful of Boom Studios stuff at a steep discount a while back, and of the bunch, Protocol: Orphans was definitely the best of the bunch. It is essentially a spy thriller starring agents who went through fairly horrific training as orphaned children, now as young adults. It does a very good job world-building and setting up the backstory without unnecessary exposition or awkward filler moments, which benefits the book greatly, as it's not a very long read. The only problem I had with it, leading to the above score, was just that you don't get a lot to work with. I certainly don't hate the characters, but with such a limited space to read them in, I don't have the proper time to truly love them either. And plot developments are very interesting, but again, without as much time to build them up, they aren't nearly as impactful as they might have been otherwise. All in all, if you see information on this book, and think it sounds interesting, it certainly won't be a disappointment; just don't expect anything groundbreaking. It is what it is, and what it is managed to be a solid enough story.
