I grew up with the original Project Superpowers and was impressed how it handled introducing golden age heroes into the modern age. I found it nuanced with mystery and depth, offering high concept ideas. The original PS was also conceived by those well versed in superhero history. The love for every character is on the page.
Some may argue that it was too stiff, sure. But there was no doubt a grand scale to what it was trying to achieve.
Review: Having just read through the Original Project Superpowers & Black Terror books, and after some positive reviews for this book, I decided this would be my next read.
What is this? Honestly, I was confused. Is this supposed to be a reboot? A retool? And if so, all the characterization built up from the previous volumes are completely discarded.
The most notable differences can be seen in the established characters by way of changing power types and the way characters behave. Most are now just...quippy. Which, frankly, gets old fast when nothing is motivating the quips.
I felt I didn’t know these characters anymore and nothing in the book has you grow with them. The new characters are fine yet one-to-two dimensional. Again not much growth.
The story is perplexing. The initial ground work is good, just the execution leaves a lot to be desired. I mean most of the dialogue is expository. The story assumes the audience knows these brand new takes on the characters and every issue wants you to know Bart Hill is dead and is not the Death-Defying ‘Devil. We get it.
I haven’t even gotten to the story...minor spoilers. Also, I’m paraphrasing heavily.
The ‘Devil is controlled by an alien force and warns/tries to kill Green Lama(now magical). After the warning, all the airplanes in the world start falling out of the sky because of alien tech. The “team” now officially titled Project Superpowers, go to the rescue...Scarab, Black Terror, Samson, Masquerade, and Green Lama. The American Spirit is mentioned and lingers around. There is also a new character introduced falling in one of the planes, she’ll become the new American Spirit(because now it takes a host). They all end up fighting the ‘Devil. Then after that battle, the main villain is introduced. Yada yada, heroes fight bad guy, battle becomes about American Spirit and hope. Good guys win, with tease for next story at the end.
It’s clear when reading this that the creators were inspired, just as I was by the Original Project Superpowers books, as well as LOTR, the MCU, and other pop culture from the last ten years. It really shows in the writing.
The artwork serves the story well. Through the cover gallery in the back of the book, you get the sense that they wanted to make the Scarab a woman but changed their minds, it happens just thought that was interesting. The cover gallery is by far the best for this collection.
I’m glad Project Superpowers is making a comeback. But wow, awkward.
Do yourself a favor and get the out of chronological order omnibuses. They are still fantastic!
