Princess Ugg Vol. 2 Kindle & comiXology

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 20 ratings

Despite having improved in her studies, princess Ülga still doesn’t feel any closer to being a true princess like the others, and she still hasn’t gotten a handle on diplomacy. But when the other princesses are targeted –first by bandits, and then by political figures–Ülga will have to shed her princess skin and become the “bonny wee berserker” of her people, or else the princesses are doomed! Written by Jhonen Vasquez and Eric Trueheart (Invader Zim show writer) and pencilled by Aaron Alexovich (Invader Zim character designer)!

About the Author

Ted Naifeh first appeared in the independent comics scene in 1999 as the artist for Gloomcookie, the goth romance comic he co-created with Serena Valentino for SLG Publishing. After a successful run, Ted decided to strike out on his own, writing and drawing Courtney Crumrin and the Night Things, a spooky children’s fantasy series about a grumpy little girl and her adventures with her Warlock uncle. Nominated for an Eisner Award for best limited series, Courtney Crumrin’s success paved the way for Polly and the Pirates, another children’s book, this time about a prim and proper girl kidnapped by pirates convinced she was the daughter of their long-lost queen. Over the next few years, Ted wrote four volumes of Courtney Crumrin, plus a spin off book about her uncle. He also co-created How Loathsome with Tristan Crane, and illustrated two volumes of the videogame tie-in comic Death Junior with screenwriter Gary Whitta. More recently, he illustrated The Good Neighbors, a three volume graphic novel series written by New York Times best-selling author Holly Black, published by Scholastic. In 2011, Ted wrote the sequel to Polly and the Pirates, and illustrated several Batman short stories for DC Comics. In 2012, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Courtney Crumrin, he wrote and illustrated the final two volumes of the series. Currently, you can find Ted everywhere: from the pages of Batman ‘66 to his newest original series for adults, Night’s Dominion. Ted lives in San Francisco, because he likes dreary weather.

Ted Naifeh is a writer and illustrator of comics for readers of all ages. He's best known for COURTNEY CRUMRIN, a multi-volume horror-fantasy adventures of a tween curmudgeon witch and her warlock uncle. In 2014, Ted created PRINCESS UGG, the adventure of a barbarian princess going to princess finishing school. Courtney Crumrin has been nominated for several Eisner awards, and remains a popular mainstay on the shelves of discerning comics shops. Princess Ugg has garnered much praise from the comics community and beyond.

Ted's other works include POLLY AND THE PIRATES, an all-ages adventure of a shy girl kidnapped into the role of Pirate Queen, the famous goth romance comic GLOOMCOOKIE, and the critically acclaimed HOW LOATHSOME, which explores San Francisco's underground subcultures.

Ted’s current projects include NIGHT'S DOMINION, which combines sword and sorcery adventure with modern superhero tropes, and HEROINES, a satirical examination of superhero comics from the perspective of a young woman who decides to form her own all female team of heroes.

Ted lives in San Francisco with a pet fog named Karl.

Princess Ugg was very enjoyable. I bought the two graphic novels and read them many times. I would buy more Princess Ugg books if they came out.

Princess Ugg missed its chance to be great because it lacked focus. It has the fish-out-of-water story of the country girl in a school of spoiled royals. There is a bit of the situation comedy of the normal girl dealing with comic characters. Finally, there is the quest tale of the warrior princess trying to bring the gift of knowledge back to her war torn people. The series could have been any of these stories. There was a bit of everything which weakened the book.

Quibbles aside, I would recommend this book.

An amazing female hero.

It's ok but it lacks focus and the ability to Shift tones. And it feels rushed. But it does avoid being a ham fisted lecture.
