4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 189 ratings

Pierce Brown’s Red Rising continues with Sons of Ares!

While the Sons of Ares are on the run as their mission takes a deadly turn, Fitchner Au Barca’s time at The Institute is revisited. He learned many lessons there, but the most important of all was one of loyalty. The Peerless Scarred stand above all and look down on the rest. Their dismissal of one of their own proves to be a fateful error.

Interesting to see how the author views his own characters and world. Story of the creation of Ares as the head of the resistance brings depth to the Red Rising series. The artwork is strong and visceral - world beautifully for this tale. Two story lines: Fitchner in the past, and how events mold him to become Ares, and Ares in the present, where the Sons of Ares exists.

I love the Red Rising series and this is the second of a graphic novel prequel series. I enjoyed the story - there is as much blood and violence as in Red Rising. The illustrations set the perfect tone and mood for the story.

I am loving this comic series. I normally don't read comics and haven't for years, but I concerted just to get the history on how Ares came to be and I am not disappointed in this narrative method. Here we get to see how Fitchner came to be Ares and how he came to see that violence is the only thing the Golds respect.

First let me say that I love the Red Rising books. I also liked the story and illustrations in the graphic novel. It is really interesting to learn characters' backstories. My complaint is that the story is so painfully short- to the point that I wondered if it was worth the purchase price. I was so excited about reading it and it was over in about 3 pages (I may be exaggerating, but only slightly).

Five stars because of the great story telling and good transition between two separate occasions of past and present. This is very hard to do in comic format and can go wrong so easily.

Artwork is good, but I am hoping for more detailed facial features. Looking forward to seeing the wife of Ares.

One of the best science fiction series I have read in a long time. This needs to be made into a movie.

I love this series, the artwork is unusual, but cool and quirky, and I enjoyed the extra stores from the Red Rising series (one of the best series around in my opinion).

Can't wait for #3! Fans of the Red Rising Trilogy must read. Gearing up for novel #4, these comics are a more than welcome appetizer.

This is not a true novel as written in any of the previous red rising books.
It is a graphic book/ comic. This was not highlighted before purchase of the kindle version.
