Pencils: Viktor Bogdanovic
Plot: The Justice League of China face off against the Freedom Fighters of China who are fighting for “truth, justice, and democracy,” and Kenan Kong aka Super-Man is starting to question whether the Ministry of Self Reliance is an organization for the good of China. Meanwhile, Laney Lan, the hotshot reporter from Primetime Shanghai, has found the Oriental Pearl Tower, which is the base of the Ministry of Self Reliance, and trying to interview Dr. Omen, who is the founder of the Justice League of China. Can Kenan Kong, Bat-man, and Wonder-Woman bring the Freedom Fighters to justice, or are they on the wrong side?
This books is actually starting to grow on me as I see turmoil growing in Kenan’s heart regarding his super-heroics. He starts questioning whether he is on the right side when Dragon General confronts him and claims that he fights for truth, justice and democracy and that Kenan is on the side of the oppressive side of the government. More and more we start seeing what Dr. Omen’s true intentions are and at the same time we get introduced to violent freedom fighters who have no problem murdering government officers and workers to get what they want. When reading this book, one cannot say that the good guys are really good, that the bad guys are really bad, and that not all of the bad guys are really good.
This complex story telling is done brilliantly by Yang, as the story doesn’t unfold in a complicated manner at all. In fact, my descriptions of the situations that the characters face might be more complicated than the book actually shows, because Yang and Bogdanovic do a brilliant job of keeping the reader well appraised of what is going on and at the same time hiding certain facts that may be revealed in later issues. Bogdanovic’s artwork is also great and his greatest strength is probably framing the shot for dramatic effect (check out how the page where Paper Man dispatches a guard.
