The New Mutants are one of my favorite comic teams and comic book titles and this book is probably my favorite. The very unconventional art by Bill Sienkiewicz is wonderful and Chris Claremont is one of the very best comic book writers of all time. I highly recommend this book! If you want to do some preparation then read the New Mutants Epic collection vol.1 before you read this to get some of the character development under your belt so to speak. That will make it more rich of a story but you could also just read this as a stand alone and get a lot from it. Great characters, great story, great art! If you are not already familiar with the new mutants and want a tase before diving in then this is a great book to start with. Then you can go back to Epic collection vol.1 and appreciate this even more.

It was great how this story moved thru the various incarnations of the X teams. Each Era with the bear was different but the action was good.

The artwork by Bill Sienkiewicz in this book is a amazing. The storyline from New Mutants is very weird, haunting and cool. Probably the best New Mutants story I've ever read. Demon Bear rocks!

Collecting:

New Mutants (excerpts): 1, 3, 17

New Mutants: #18-20

X-Force (1991): #99

X-Force (2008) (excerpts): #7-10

This graphic novel is the definitive collection of the Demon Bear saga. This new edition replaces the older and out of print
The New Mutants: The Demon Bear Saga  and for the first time brings together demon bear stories from across several decades into a single trade paperback edition. (Note:  The New Mutants: The Demon Bear Saga  includes New Mutants #21, which is not included here).

While the supplemental X-Force issues are fun, the real reason to buy this trade are the collected New Mutants #18-20. Warlock is introduced to readers for the first time. Magik's mystical armor is introduced for the first time. Chris Claremont's storytelling in these issues is among his best. Better still, the artwork of Bill Sienkiewicz is stunning. I recall, many years ago, when the magazines came out, that I was a little shocked by Sienkiewicz's art. My young brain had never seen anything like these violent yet dream-like panels. Thirty years later, Sienkiewicz's art is still arresting (and I still have never seen anything like his work in comics anywhere else).

If you've never read the Demon Bear Saga or if you've never seen Sienkiewicz's art, this graphic novel is a great purchase!
