Cypher!

While this may not have been the best story ever written, it was certainly enjoyable to me. Cypher played a huge role, so for fans of him, this is a must.

Fun Revisiting of Chris Claremont's Past Glories

Writers often fail when they revisit past triumphs. For example, nobody thinks “The Dangerous Summer” is on par with Ernest Hemingway’s previous books on bullfighting like “Death in the Afternoon” for example. The same can often hold true in comics. Paul Levitz, who did an amazing job with “The Legion of Super-Heroes” back in the 1980s failed to find anything resembling that success after the “New 52” launch.

But sometimes writers can at least remain within sight, if not keep up with, of past triumphs when they revisit them. That proves to be the case with Chris Claremont who returns to his glory days penning Marvel’s mutant comics with “The New Mutants Forever.” Set when Magneto was headmaster of Xavier’s School (late 1980s for all of you who came in late), this story offers an interesting revisit to Magma’s home of Nova Roma where the New Mutants take on the Red Skull.

This is an engaging and often exciting, if not particularly memorable, story with Claremont doing well pulling the strings on the various characters and offering a particularly interesting take on Selene. The art by Al Rio, ink by Bob McLeod who helped Claremont create the team and covers by Bill Sienkiewicz only add to what is an enjoyable main tale.

There are also two comics from the late 80s included as Claremont lets the New Mutants engage and interact with the Hellions at a social event. The art team here, led by Rick Leonardi, do a fine job but it does seem a little jarring after the previous comics. There’s also a fine look at the early history of the New Mutants included in the book.

This is a solid, if not great, outing. Recommended, especially for New Mutants and 80s Marvel fans.

one of my favorite X-men runs was the New Mutants stories that Claremont did way back when with the outstanding Bill Sienkiewicz. (New Mutant Classics #3). if you are unfamiliar with the Claremont-Sienkiewicz run, go spend your money on that. I'm so bored with what was done in THIS book (NMF), that I can't even brig it upon myself to write a worthwhile review. so it's nutshell time: claremont rehashes a stale storyline by sending the muties back to Nova Roma. again! Al Rio provides sub-par art. I couldn't honestly make it all the way through. perhaps the end redeemed it all and I missed out. but I still can't recommend steering away from this lazy snoozer enough. save your money. spend your precious time more wisely than with this extreme disappointment.
