BOOKLIST -- While some of us old fogeys will lament the darkening of these stalwart, all-American kid detectives, teens will find this disillusioned and gritty version of great interest. The sunny town of Bayport has a dark underbelly. Police detective Fenton Hardy is dead and disgraced, and his sons Frank and Joe stand accused of his murder. Enter tough-as-nails Nancy, who helps them infiltrate the Bayport underworld to clear themselves and uncover the truth about Dad. Del Col creates an interesting friction between the brothers, but it's Nancy who drives the plot with a feisty confidence and hard-boiled dialogue that she maintains even through her own tragic familial revelations. While the three are all enterprising and brave, for famous detectives, they do virtually no actual deducting, making the familiar crime elements somewhat less riveting for it. The visuals, though, stand out for the international art team's subtly nonstandard sensibilities. The refined gestures and body language of characters, the somber blues and seeping noir shadows, and even the unusual integration of the sound effects create an enjoyably distinct world.- Jesse Karp

Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys: The Big Lie, Detective Fenton Hardy has been murdered, and the Bayport police think Joe and Frank murdered their father. The boys, high school teens, face session after session in the police station, interrogated by Chief Collig and Detective Peterson. It turns out that was the plan, concocted by their friend Nancy. Someone framed Fenton Hardy and made him look like a crooked cop before murdering him, and the teens decide to play a very dangerous game to prove Detective Hardy's innocence and find the actual murderer. This story is not for children, but for high school-age readers; everything in the book, from the tough characters to the somewhat seedy atmosphere in Bayport to the dark-toned art lends to the strongly noir mystery. Nobody, including Nancy and the Hardy boys, are quite what they appear; everyone has secrets here. Older teens who enjoy mysteries and anyone who thought that the classic Nancy Drew and the Hardy boys were too good to be true will enjoy this story.

I have no words. This is truly excellent. If you're going to break the mold of a known property and re-imagine it, then do it like this. Art and writing are excellent. The characterizations are different, yet true. Adaptations often feel the need to shock and trick in order to entice. This isn't true. Make it the same, but refreshed. Take notes Hollywood writers. This is how it's done.

I love this comic to death and I've read it multiple times since I purchased it! I'm not even kidding. This isn't the typical Nancy Drew & Hardy Boys that we all know and love. These are the kids that grew up in the real world and it's a very dark world. You wouldn't be disappointed with this new take on the characters. It's spectacular!

Worst story ever! If you’re a true fan of Nancy drew, hardy boys, Tom swift or bobbsey twins you will be sorely disappointed!!! Not true to the characters. Spoiler: turns some of them evil. Poorly written fan fiction.

As a kid, I read every Hardy Boys book I could get my hands on. I also read a couple of the Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew team ups. I even occasionally read a Tom Swift story (no Bobsey Twins, though). I say all that in order to explain why I took a chance on Anthony Del Col's re-imagining of Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys for the 2010's. The book he created, Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys: The Big Lie, follows some other recent updates of classic and beloved characters. So, as a former fan, I was interested to see what Del Col came up with. It turns out it was pretty good.

So, The Big Lie is the story of how the Hardy brothers were accused of the murder of their father, Det. Fenton Hardy, and how Nancy Drew helped them solve the mystery. However, it's much deeper than that, involving drug smuggling brothers (the Rovers), a broken relationship between Nancy and her father, Federal Prosecuter Carson Drew, the seedy underbelly of Bayport, and the mysteries that lie beneath the surface of seemingly idyllic towns. It's also about families, and quite possibly about the dreams and innocence of childhood turning into the reality of being an adult.

The mystery behind The Big Lie was interesting, and not to easy to figure out. It was an enjoyable story which sets the stage for bigger mysteries to come in future Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys mini-series. I think what I enjoyed the most, though, was the updating of the characters and their lives. The shine is definitely off Frank and Joe Hardy, and, really, Nancy Drew as well. The brothers bicker and fight, and see the world in grayer tones than they used to. They are sure not the simple, unchanging characters of my youth. Nancy is still very confident, but has lost her innocence too, through a broken relationship with her father (who used to be her best friend). It was neat seeing this more adult version of the characters, and while it's different seeing them as imperfect, it makes for a much more engaging story and allows the characters the potential to grow and change.

The other fun thing about The Big Lie is all the nods to the books these characters have been in, together and by themselves. There are allusions to solving mysteries on the beach as children, and how nothing ever seemed to change (over 100 books and the characters are still the same age). Del Col also throws in Tom Swift and the Bobsey Twins to add another nod to childhood reading.

Overall, I would highly recommend Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys: The Big Lie, by Anthony Del Col, especially to readers who grew up with the original characters. Enjoy the Veronica Mars-ish vibe.

I received a preview copy of this book from Dynamite Entertainment and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Meh, not for me. Felt like they were trying to emulate the CW's formula with Riverdale, but it ended up being overly edgy.
