Editorial Reviews

Review

"Liu and Takeda have created a vivid, dynamic world, sort of a steampunk Asia of a century ago, and populated it with sharp characters and an intricate mythology that incorporates gods, monsters and everything in between. Female characters dominate Liu's story line - which unfolds bit by bit like a novel through Takeda's gorgeous sequential panels-and touches on themes of race, war, duality, friendships and the meaning of family. In all my decades of reading comics, I've never seen anything quite like Monstress, and even though it falls in the category of epic fantasy, it also confirms my suspicion that sarcastic cats are secretly in charge of everything." -The New York Times

"Monstress mixes steampunk and fantasy in the best way." -
Complex

"Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda take eastern and western comics storytelling traditions and styles, and create something wholly their own and remarkable: a beautifully told story of magic and fear, inhumanity and exploitation, of what it means to be human and the monsters we all carry inside us. Also, some of the best cats in comics. A delight." -Neil Gaiman

“If you want big, beautiful, terrifying, violent magic, Monstress is your next favorite comic.” -
Cosmopolitan

"Liu's accomplishment is impressive. She's created characters who feel larger than life, but whose motivations and values are almost always obscure.” -NPR

“Filled to the brim with awesome.” -

Review

"Monstress is a sprawling epic fantasy that drops readers into the middle of a magic-filled alternate history. Described as a kind of 'matriarchal Asia,' Maika's universe is wracked by a race war and inhabited by violent witch-nuns, vicious deities, and innocent civilians-all of which is brought to life by Takeda's exquisite manga-style, Art Deco-inspired art." -The Atlantic

War is Coming

War is Coming
Two things happened when I finished reading Monstress Volume 3:1. I learned that I was simultaneously desperate to continue reading and scared that something awful would happen to Kippa. My fear for Kippa won and I’ve been putting off reading this Volume for months now as a result.2. I bought Book One, the signed exclusive version, and it’s gorgeous! It even includes postcards, which feature some of Sana Takeda’s extraordinary artwork.Just in case I wasn’t already too invested in Kippa’s wellbeing, this Volume begins by upping her adorability quotient to infinity by showing me baby Kippa! Because apparently my emotions are fair game. Incidentally, toddler Maika is also a sweetheart.Maika and Corvin are trying to find Kippa, who is being taken to the ‘doctor’. That sounds ominous. While all of the adults are strategising for the coming war it’s Kippa who again softens the narrative with her ability to forgive someone who betrayed her.“I can’t abandon people because they make mistakes - I would have to abandon myself.”I’m not always entirely clear what’s happening at all times or whose side I should be on but I do know one thing: war is coming, people, and it’s not gonna be pretty.

This is so well written. A gripping story. The characters are very well developed. All of which makes Volume 4 a seamless extension of the previous 3 volumes. And Art Work! Sana Takeda's artwork sets the highest standard for world-building. So much information is conveyed through the images.

The story continues....We get a lot of our heroine's background story in this graphic novel as well as that of her father and some of her mother. All the opposing forces are coming together for a BIG clash (in the next installment) and we are getting ready for that. The excitement is really building and I just love this series and am drooling at the tense moments and wonderful characters and all the great artwork!! This is one of my favorite series. I can't wait until volume 5 comes out!!

The artistry of this pair is wonderful! Such wild imaginings, so delicately rendered. Through 4 volumes now they've yet to lose any velocity imo! I want more

I binged the second to third books in the series, so I'm dropping all the information here.

Overall, the series is interesting. I am not super tied to the plot and more or less indifferent to the main character, but I like Master Ren the cat and Kippa the half fox. Something about them is compelling. I think the indifference to the plot is that it takes a while to figure out what is going on. The back story is only slowly revealed. And there's a lot of characters and other stuff going on. It's a fantasy problem where there's so much world building needed and the question as an artist is how to reveal that to the reader. The exposition dump is not front loaded so it takes time.

The really notable thing remains the artwork It's beautiful and lush and detailed. Every panel is a work of art.

I was going to wait for the compendium (book 2) but gave in and happy about it. Super entertaining volume 4. Ordering volume 5 now.

Love this comic, has a good story line that leans on strong female figures. The art work looks like steam punk, art nouveau, with a touch of eyes.

This has quickly become one of my favorite comics. Everybody that I’ve introduced this series to, loves it.
