Medicine Man is a metaphor for Leukocytes (White Blood Cells) - the foot soldiers of our immune system. They circulate the cardiovascular/lymphatic system to combat infectious microbes. These immune cells are able to distinguish alien microorganisms from our own cells, track and kill the intruders, and communicate with each other to organize cooperative missions. As completely autonomous entities, they adapt and make educated decisions based on their surroundings.
When Kenny Nam, the author of this series, used to work in a molecular biology laboratory, he observed that the white blood cells reacted to stimuli as if with consciousness. Their independence and resilience reminded him of tribal warriors waging war against foreign invaders. Mesmerized by their behavior, he started imagining the leukocytes as his own microcosmic inner-selves. This obsession grew so strong that it was eventually forged into a comic book series.
With Medicine Man, Kenny wishes to offer fresh perspective on the way we view our world. Throughout the story, the protagonist Dancing Ghost realizes that her world is in danger and that she has to join forces with fellow Medicine Men to save the galaxy. By following her closely, Kenny hopes to illustrate how we can do the same to preserve our own environment.
