Lost Carnival: A Dick Grayson Graphic Novel Kindle & comiXology
Haly's traveling circus no longer has the allure of its glamorous past, but it still has one main attraction: the Flying Graysons, a family of trapeze artists featuring a teenage Dick Grayson. The only problem is that Dick loathes spending his summers performing tired routines for dwindling crowds.
When the Lost Carnival opens nearby and threatens to pull Haly's remaining customers, Dick is among those drawn to its nighttime glow. But there are ancient forces at work at the Lost Carnival, and when Dick meets the mysterious Luciana and her nomadic family, he may be too mesmerized to recognize the danger ahead.
Beneath the carnival's dazzling fireworks, Dick must decide between who he is and who he wants to be-choosing either loyalty to his family history or a glittering future with new friends and romance. Author Michael Moreci and illustrator Sas Milledge will suspend readers from a tightrope in this graphic novel, redefining Dick Grayson for a new generation.

Life as a circus performer isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and Dick Grayson is desperate for some way to break up his routine and find who he really wants to be. Dick and his parents comprise the circus’s trapeze act, The Flying Graysons, but his “death defying stunts” feel more like the choreographed routine they are than anything exciting. As audiences dwindle, the troupe realizes that another performance has arrived in town, where magic just might be the reality. Dick is immediately drawn to their fantastical show, and cannot resist the sense of wonder infused in the atmosphere. He soon meets one of their performers who can use real magic, and is quickly captured by both her powers and her smile. All is not as it seems at The Lost Carnival, however, and a darkness lurks just beyond the surface.

Michael Moreci has captured Dick Grayson exactly how I would’ve imagined him in his life before becoming Batman’s first Robin! This story is focused on Dick’s younger life, before he got into crime fighting. The illustrations, by Sas Milledge and Phil Hester are crisp and communicative, really capturing the wonder and timelessness of a carnival experience. I loved every bit of this book, from story to presentation, and it’s easily one of my favorite DC Comics titles that I’ve gotten to review!
My Recommendation-
If you love the original dynamic duo of Batman and Robin, you will definitely want to check out The Lost Carnival! Even if you aren’t well-versed in Batman lore, this stand-alone graphic novel could be a great pick for your next read, especially if you enjoy tales of youthful rebellion and magical intrigue!
This story was very satisfying and hit all the character traits that Dick possesses: wanting to help solve problems and help people, his teenage rebellious streak, how deeply and fast he can fall in love, and his relationship with his parents (seriously, I want more canonical pre-Robin stories of the Graysons). There's no reliance on any previous canon for this story, which allows this comic to flourish as an original story. It brings in both the magic and the real-life treatment while in the life of the circus, the urge to have something more, and pitting family over love in the mindset of a teenage boy.
I'm not going to spoil the story, but this story is going to hit you in the feels a few times, especially a double punch at the end. I may have teared up a bit, but that is how well the author pulls you into the world. The art is also fantastic with utilizing both art deco and modern techniques-- the two worlds exist in their own color scheme to show the separation between them for example.
I'm going to be interested in seeing how Dick will blend into the overall YA Ink world. In the "second generation" of heroes, we have now established Barbara Gordon, Raven, Cassandra, and Dick (with Zatanna, Aqualad, & Beast Boy to also release this year). How will their stories fit into the teenage antics of Bruce, Diana, Mera, Jack, & Selina (with Swamp Thing to join in 2020)?
These books are for the 13+ crowd, but they still tell breathtaking stories that even adult fans will enjoy. But start with Dick, because really, it's wonderful.
Dick Grayson feels stifled by his family and wants to be more than a trapeze artist.
When he encounters Luciano, Dick gets drawn into a paranormal mystery.
I have to admit, I am a late bloomer when it comes to the DC comic world. I've only recently got into comics for about three years now which is strange since my brothers are both great comic artists and they always had tons of them around when we were kids. That being said, I went in with a clean slate and an open mind.
LOST CARNIVAL is Dick Grayson's origin story or at least part of it. The events of this comic and subsequent volumes (I hope) are based before he lost his parents and became Robin alongside our favorite bat with the abs. We see him as an angsty teenager with a yearning for a life outside of the circus. He meets Luciana, a player in a nearby carnival that puts him in awe and suddenly he's thrust into a world of magic and love.
This comic is drawn in a monochromatic fashion, which to my surprise, I liked. I am more of a vibrant color person, but this book, along with the superb writing, drew me in like no other. I loved how the color tone changed with the mood. I swear some of those boards had me in near tears.
Overall, I loved it. I cannot wait for the next installment.
I thought this was a very sweet story, and the twist definitely surprised me. The romance was a sweet addition to the story that didn’t upstage it, as were the friendships. I was able to get a feel for the different characters and the world inside this graphic novel, and I fell in love with it. I am always drawn to stories that feature carnivals, and this one was unique and entertaining. I hope there are more and that this becomes a series... but until then I am definitely going to be rereading this one sometime.

I will put my hand up and say I have never been the biggest fan of Dick Grayson. I thought he was ok when he was Robin, really came into his own as Nightwing, but not as Batman. He was too happy the brooding persona does not suit him. So having as a broody teenages did not endear the book to me.
I did expect a lot more action or acrobatic out of him. I understand that the story was more about him finding his place. As the contrast in the colours in the carnival parts Luciana knows her place and responsibilities and is the perfect contrast to him. Opposites attract right.
The story was ok, the artwork ok and the action was lacking. Unfortunately this was just not the book for me.
grayson is way to old - but fair enough if you wanna try something new .. just nail it.
probably a must read for fan birds but I can not recommend it. there are better grayson stories out there.
