Legends of the Dark Knight: Jim Aparo Vol. 1 (The Brave and the Bold (1955-1983)) Kindle & comiXology

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 55 ratings

Jim Aparo was one of the premier Batman artists of the 1970s, working primarily on the Batman team-up title THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD. Now, DC collects Aparo's run on the series in hardcover for the first time from the beginning. Aparo portrayed Batman as a detective who operated in shadow, yet captured the action and thrills of the Caped Crusader. These stories feature appearances by numerous DC heroes (and villains) including Robin, Green Arrow, Black Canary, the Teen Titans, Deadman, Wonder Woman, The Demon, The Joker, Aquaman, The Atom and many others.

Mr. Aparo was always one of my favorite Batman artists. With all due respect to Mr. Infantino and the others, Mr. Aparo rarely disappointed. I had not seen most of these stories, and so was quite thrilled when this volume became available. I just wish he had done Brave & Bold #179, which was the team-up with the Legion. Looking forward to the next volume, which I believe he guest-stars in the issue #124 with Batman & Sgt. Rock. Modern readers will no doubt notice all the tobacco use, but that was around a lot back then, and certainly since Mr. Aparo was one of the users himself. Enjoy!

Although I'm not all excited about Bob Haney, it is hard to detach him from Jim Aparo's realistic artwork on the Batman. And this text certainly pays tribute to this great Batman artist of the seventies by exhibiting all his Batman work from the very beginning. By reading these stories (and rereading in some cases) one may see why Brave and the Bold was so appealing to youngsters or teenagers. Very often readers get to see shoot outs between cops and robbers that have a cinematic quality to it. And maybe Haney's Batman may not have been dark knight material, but undoubtedly, his convoluted plots may have also appealed to youngsters back then. Interestingly enough, DC adds the covers to the issues, something it did not do with the Marshall Rogers edition where the covers were placed at the end of the volume. In this volume Batman teams up with Wildcat, Teen Titans, the Phantom Stranger, Metamorpho, Deadman, Metal Men, Sgt. Rock, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Wonder Woman (without powers), Kamandi, Man-Bat, The Thing, The Atom, Aquaman, and even with the Joker (he makes two appearances).

Can only assign 3 stars, because of the missing covers. This is likely the ONLY collection of these stories DC will ever produce. Even though this is marketed as a Jim Aparo project, it's truly a Brave & the Bold project in which Jim illustrated the stories. Anyone buying the book just for Aparo art would surely recognize which covers he did and didn't produce, so excluding them just doesn't make sense. And many people will be buying this because it's classic Bronze Age Batman -- and will certainly wonder why some covers are missing, while others aren't.

Also, cover shots are really good ways to break up the stories. Some of the stories in this book run right into each other -- and can be confusing -- especially to people viewing this material for the first time.

Frankly, any time comics material is reprinted, the cover should ALWAYS be reprinted with it. Excluding non-Aparo covers here was really a bad decision on someone's part.

On Jim Aparo's worst day he was better than any artist at DC or Marvel during the 1970's. Haney swayed in and out of DC's continuity on a whim, but he could write a big story in a single issue better than anyone. If there is someone out there who has never read these stories and is looking for fun and adventure over grim modern superhero "realism", then this is the book for you.

Enjoyed the 70s BatMan! Awesome how the times were , and to see how the legends like Aparo and Adam's drew.

BATMAN by Jim Aparo, this is how BATMAN is suppose to look. These stories are from BRAVE AND THE BOLD comics from the early 1970's, all of which I have in single issue form but it is nice to have a hardcover volume to read and enjoy. It is terrific that DC is honoring this man's work, it is long past due.

While the writing ranges from the wacky to downright offensive, it's still great fun. It's the art, however, that's breathtaking. Aparo, to my mind, ranks second only to Neal Adams as the all time great Batman artist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome collection.

My favourite thing about this book is what a nice job they did with the colouring. Nice vibrant pages without tampering with the way it originally looked. Will definitely purchase future volumes. I wish the Neal Adams hardcovers had been handled this way.

5.0 out of 5 stars シャープなタッチが人気のジム アポロ傑作集!
Reviewed in Japan on June 30, 2013
