There is definitely a bit of a culture gap with some of the jokes—lots of Lolicon side remarks, which are definitely not meant to be taken seriously but do come across uncomfortably sometimes.
The premise is unique, with the main focus being on Mashiro's isolation and her subsequent introduction to Japanese society. Although not as present in the first book, the series develops a theme later about an abused child finding joy in life, which allows her to transform from someone numb and empty inside to a person with her own valid opinions and desires. Mashiro's physical appearance reflects the stunted maturity caused by abuse, and the moments of her transformation reflect moments of significance as she decides who she wants to be as a person. She has to learn who she is despite repeated attempts by her family to repress her and invalidate her existence.
That being said, the actual story is not serious enough to be as moving as it could be, but it's sweet and cute and worth reading, especially if you're a fan of Ema Toyama. I'd rate it more like 4.5 stars.
